Retirement Goes to Part Time

I knew it wouldn't last long because I know my hubby has a hard time saying NO, especially to a friend. I also know he loves what he does, so when he was asked to help fill in the slots of working regular duty, he said yes. This all happened because an officer who was ill and working part time is still taking treatments for his illness and his doctor advised him to get out of the public and to stay at home with this virus going around. So far my husband has only had to pull 4 evenings/nights shift in March and it isn't too bad. However, it has been a long time since he has worked nights and his system is having a hard time adjusting. He has been having sleepless nights and wanting to sleep all day. I guess this is to be expected. Since the problem with more time available now and short one part time person, I know he will have to put in more hours in April which will put him at working part time regular schedule. I'm not happy about that, especially with the Corona Virus so active right now in Louisiana. Do you have a hard time adjusting back to night and day when you have to swap routines? My husband hasn't worked since 2004; but he still stays up all night. He's used to working 2nd and 3rd shifts. Even though he was last on days, he still stays up. I've gotten into the habit too. It's so bad.

I like to stay up late. It's quiet and no distractions. I always worked on writing then when we had Epinions, Viewpoints, magazine articles, and Associated Content going.

@kareng Yeah, I miss those sites. I should write for Vocal; but when I spend so many hours here, then I'm done for the day.

@LindaOHio I know how you feel. I think the best way to get involved with other sites is to make a schedule. So many minutes a day at site 1 and so many for site 2, etc. Or by days..Mon-MyLot, Tues-Vocal, Wed-Mylot, Thurs-Vocal, etc. I would probably have to do the first because I love racking up points on Swagbucks, and also on my survey site that pays out in $50 increments--that one isn't bad with lots of surveys $1.00 and above. They also have lesser amounts too.

@kareng That is how it is if you work at night and want to sleep during the day. I can understand why you would worry about him being out there with the virus going around.

That's a tough adjustment to make. I never had had a drastic change in my schedule, but a nurse friend of mine recently went from nights to days.

I always had trouble adjusting when I was the night receiving manager at Walmart. We'd work a 4-night workweek, giving us 3 days off. Of course, since all my friends worked day jobs, on my 3 days off I would attempt to revert back to a normal schedule so I could do things with my friends. It was horrible. I was like a walking zombie the entire time I was on night shift.

Yep, I remember those kind of days when hubby first started with EBR Sheriff's Dept. He was assigned to the main parish jail and night shift. It was horrible. I wasn't working then so I kept the same hours he did or else I wouldn't see him at all.

@kareng You were lucky that you had the opportunity to keep the same hours as him. Many couples don't have that opportunity. It definitely can make it hard on relationships.

I'm sorry he was called back to work and sorry he's having a hard time adjusting to the new routine. I hope he'll be safe with the coronavirus so bad everywhere.

This is an agency he provides training for and agreed to fill in when needed. So far this has only happened one time. Now this is going to be a little more. I think I can handle 4-5 nights a month. I'm waiting to see what April's schedule will hold. I'm sure it will be a little more with a regular part time employee out until the virus scare is over.

Working night ships is not healthy when your system will not get used to it and you feel that you are always lacking sleep. My hubby used to have 3 different working hours, night, early and midday and it was hard for his system.

When hubby first started Sheriff's Dept. in Baton Rouge, he had 3 shifts. Days started at 5 am, afternoons 3 pm and dog shift at 11 pm.

I would not do well with changing work times.I am great at early mornings. I do okay with mid shifts but do not prefer them. Overnights would kill me.

I think it would be worse if all night. He is doing 5 pm to midnight right now. That isn't too bad but does mess with his sleep when he is then off.

That does sound like a hard thing to get readjusted to. I hope he will remain safe and can return to retirement soon.

He will get used to it soon I hope. I adjust to being awake all night very easily. Just not to getting up early.
