In All Honesty, Does It REALLY Surprise You?

Earlier today there was an excellent discussion here posted by @marguicha , titled, “I Am Shocked At the Stupidity of Some Human Beings.” In it, she chided a doctor in her country who had gone shopping without any protection...but with full knowledge she (the M.D.) was infected with the COVID-19 bug. After my nap i woke up to the news that country singer Joe Diffie has died from COVID-19, as has Arrows lead singer and songwriter Alan Merrill (he was the person responsible for the song that Joan Jett famously covered, “I Love Rock and Roll”). Additionally, country/rock/folk legend John Prine is reportedly in critical condition, intubated in a hospital, with the virus. Jackson Browne reported that he has the virus, but his case appears mild. These are just three names in one stinking afternoon. There are other celebrities contacting it and dying from it. Is someone’s favorite actor going to have to croak before people go, “Wow, this is real”? However...... As I was reading Marguchia’s post this morning, I thought, “In all honesty, does it REALLY surprise you?” There is a gene in humans, whether it’s a “self-destruct button” gene or “stupidity at the wrong time” gene, that seems intent on helping people kill themselves. I’ve mentioned it before, but there is a tongue-in-cheek (in a sad sort of way) website called the Darwin Awards, where they pay, ahem, “tribute” to people who die trying to prove Darwin’s “natural selection” theory was correct. (I told my brother last month that the guy who had recently died by shooting himself off in a homemade rocket to prove the earth is flat seemed to be the clear-cut winner for the 2020 award.) Also consider the fact that EVERY DAY there are an average of over 2,700 people arrested for drunk driving. That’s just in America, and just the people driving drunk who get caught. That does NOT consider the 25 per day who die or kill someone in a wreck. (And, as I said, that’s merely the U.S. statistics, NOT anything world-wide.) Plus, throw in the additional 2,800 people who die annually because of texting on the phone (either themselves or someone else’s carelessness) and the ones who die while high on meth or opioids, and you can see that the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t the first time that we’ve had “a mess’a people whose elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top floor” (a couple of southern colloquialisms). And, with the case of the drunk driver or the texter, they aren’t always killing themselves but passing the misery on to others. It’s sad. It’s downright maddening. But, if you look at the history of our behavior, it’s not all that shocking. It seems “Here, hold my beer” is as contagious as the virus. Here’s the original article from earlier today:
Yesterday, a woman that lived in part of the city that was under total quarantine, went with some relatives to a supermarket and then to a medical center. She...

And in Australia, 60 doctors got off a ship after an on-board, offshore conference and snuck past authorities. They're now out in society possibly spreading the virus. And these are doctors!! I'm really sad to hear that about John Prine.

Doctors must be the one who help contain the virus but some of them are the reason of spreading.. I guess no one is perfect

Sadly there are those who just think "this doesn't apply to me" and go about their lives without any care or thought of another person.

Either the self destruct gene or the Super hero, invincible mental aberration:" It can happen to others but not to me." Until it is right in your own home you do not believe it will happen. It is frustrating.

How strange for a doctor to do that! She must not mind violating the doctor's oath, "First, do no harm."

@FourWalls Again, like you, that does not surprise me. People have lost their minds. Those are the same ones that will say I don't need to follow any rules about the virus. I won't get it. This craziness has to settle down soon.

Most people around here are taking precautions, but let them step foot in Walmart and they lose any sense they ever had. It's like a time warp where no pandemic could ever exist.

I dont think you can base a whole peoples intelligence level on one stupid doctor. Soooooooo. Yeah that being said. I think people are freaking out too much. If they are infected, or feel sick then yes. They need to quarentine. But some of us cannot afford to do so.

Yes, that is a problem isn't. I read this guy in India who was out delivering medical and food supplies to those that need it got beat up by the police for being outdoors. I agree many people seem to be stressing out. One person for example in this thread wrote people can "f" off! I can understand why people are getting stressed. It is dangerous times we live in.

It really hurts when People neglect protective measures. Here also some Doctors got ill because of carelessness. Though we are dependent on those doctors and nurses in these tough times. I feel for them.

If I've learned anything from the current situation, it is that some people are really, REALLY stupid. Even people that I previously thought were reasonably intelligent.

The problem as well as a good thing with this virus is that it doesn't kill everyone who gets it. Maybe some people think it is not that serious and we will win by getting it so as to build up immunity against it. What about Mexico? Did I read that country isn't asking its people to stay isolated? Thought I read that and don't see that country even listed yet on the number of deaths due to covid 19.

So very true. I wonder if it is just selfishness that gives a person the thought to go out like that when they know that they are infected. Sad.

There are so many self-absorbed people in this world. They think what they have to say or do is more important than anything or anyone else. And damn the person that is just stopped at a stop sign.

I dont know those big personalities in you music industry but what I want to share is that. Most of the targets of this virus are those who always travel for leisure or business. Those who always socialize and those who are famous. For they encounter more people than us ordinary one. Hoping for this to end soon
