Hooray for the Good Guys!

Three cheers for people who are doing good in this pandemic! Amid all the problems we’re having, there are a lot of companies and individuals who are stepping up to the plate to help people affected by this crazy twist in life. I want to highlight a few that I know about. *Yum! Brands CEO David Gibbs is giving up his salary for the rest of the year. He’s directing it to go back into the company (which owns such fast food franchises as Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut) to help the employees. *Hagan Properties here in Louisville has announced that the residents of their apartment complex will pay no rent in April and will have their May late fee delayed or waived (depending on how long this continues). Hagan is primarily a business realty company; however, they do have a couple of apartment complexes in town. *Texas Roadhouse is giving free lunches to truck drivers at locations where the big rigs can reach the “curbside service” setup. *Starbuck is giving medical professionals free coffee. *Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is giving the medical personnel free donuts. *Kroger is giving a “hero bonus” to the employees working during this. (I was in a Kroger recently, and they had someone at the front door, wiping down the shopping cart for each person!) *Dolly Parton is going to read books to children (and probably more adults!) online. It’s a trying time, but the cream rises to the top. I can’t wait to go to Texas Roadhouse tomorrow to thank them for helping us by helping the truck drivers! (Oh, and PS: Hobby Lobby? I’ll remember you guys, too. ) A Dale Watson trucking song to salute the men and women keeping the supply chain flowing in the US:

You're right about the good stories coming out. However, I get a bit cynical about some of our CEOs taking a paycut and maybe giving up 50% of their wage. However their annual wage is in the millions so it's hardly an imposition to give up half.

The Yum! CEO is giving everything up, not just taking a pay cut. He makes $7 million a year, so I think he can easily afford it. But I agree with you wholeheartedly about people announcing they're "taking a pay cut," as if we're supposed to be amazed that they'll be able to live on "only" 4.2 million instead of 4.5 million.

@FourWalls Giving up your whole salary really is very commendable. At that rate, you'd be used to a certain lifestyle. I'd never begrudge them some sort of wage.

I commend these companies for stepping up. I know a lot of people think that just because they may make a lot of money that negates their good deeds. But honestly should anyone judge them on how much they make. If I made that much I sure as hell wouldn't feel like guilty about it and they shouldn't either. So a huge

I've been posting a #lookforthehelpers hashtag on Facebook when I find things like this. After 9/11 happened, Mr Rogers said that when he was little and scared, his mother told him to look for the helpers -- paramedics, firemen, etc. -- that someone is always helping.
