Oh, to feel no pain

In our bookshelves, we have the trilogy of the Millenium series – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Stirred the Hornet’s Nest. I’ve read them all over the last few weeks and now I’m going through them again. They are very absorbing but I’ve been so keen to find out ‘what happens next’ that I tended to skim read. With this reading, I am taking my time and can appreciate the more subtle details. One character is unable to feel pain. This intrigued me so off I went to Google and sure enough, there is a condition called ‘Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP)’ or ‘congenital analgesia’. At first I thought how convenient but of course pain warns us that something is wrong and may prevent us continuing on with a harmful activity. People with CIP often die in childhood as a result of injuries or illnesses going unnoticed. Have you heard of this condition? Incidentally, the author of the Millenium series, Stieg Larsson, died from a heart attack before the books were published. It is said he lived on ‘cigarettes, processed food and copious amounts of coffee’.

I’ve never heard of it. It would be a terrible condition to suffer from.

Not feeling pain would be good in some respects but not in others.

I had heard stories in remote rural areas , people there think that this is some kind of supernatural power or gift or something acquired through an amulet or talisman

I can imagine that uneducated people would think it was some strange power.

I have a cousin that feel no pain. He broke both legs without knowing it. I have an extremely high tolerance for pain but do know when something is wrong.

My goodness, your poor cousin. That's the worry, isn't it? Not knowing if you've hurt yourself. I guess a high pain tolerance is good.

I've read about the condition, it must be very weird. Even weirder than the translation of the first and third title, in Swedish they're called "Men who hates women." and "The air castle that exploded."

@JudyEv I prefer the Swedish, they're called the same in Norwegian. The German titles are again totally different. They're called Verblendung, Verdamnis and Vergebung (Delusion, Damnation, Forgiveness). The French titles were really long.

@Torunn A local author wanted to call his book 'Blood on the Wattle' but the publishing company went with 'Blood in the Dust' as being more universal/international.

I have only heard about the book Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but I have not read it. Congenital analgesia it is a very dangerous condition, the pain is the signal of the body that something is wrong. If you get your fingers too close to the fire, you feel the pain and you pay attention, those with congenital analgesia get their fingers seriously burnt.

@JudyEv There are scary diseases and we know very little of them. I was reading this morning of this new problem, a variation of Covid-19 that is attacking the heart arteries of children.

I've heard of the condition but didn't know the proper name for it. It is not a condition that I would like to have, Pain is a gift without it we often would not know when we had a physical ailment that needed to be attended to,

@JudyEv That's often true of other things in life when we look at other peoples lot in life and are tempted to say it is alright for them when they seem to have something in their lives that we don't have. At first glance it looks like they have it made but we don't see what negative things they have to contend with.

The daughter of one of my co-workers has this condition. I had never heard of it before either until my co-worker's daughter was born. She has told us how careful she has to be with her daughter, and how closely the girl needs to be watched, due to her probability of suffering an injury or illness without showing any signs or symptoms.

Sh*t, it sounds like we share the same diet (to an extent). But I've already made it to 60. I've heard that those with Leprosy also suffer(ed) from the inability to feel pain, leading to the scars for which they were famous and shunned.

I saw at least one or two of the movies. I would read the books though if I saw them somewhere cheap or free. I might even get them from the library sometime. You would have thought he would have cared enough to stick around until the books were published at least..Some people just don't seem to care about themselves in the least.

It would be scary in your own child. You'd have to be forever on the alert to keep them from harming themselves unknowingly.
