Life Saver

I used to donate blood or blood products regularly, but for a while I could not, then we moved and it is not so convenient, and hubby was needing me at home more, etc.
Knowing the need, and not being at work I did go to a local blood drive. I gave what used to be called "double red" but now is called "power red". It is a double unit of red blood cells.
They only want it from certain blood types, and you can only donate it half as often. The procedure is apharesis, which means, I guess, that they replace what they took with saline and return your plasma.
One unit of red blood may save as many as three lives, so I guess I was a "Life saver" yesterday, for six.
They are very aware of sanitizing all parts of the cots, social distancing, hand sanitizer, gloves, masks, etc. You were encouraged afterwards to pick up a beverage and snack and get out of there. No sitting socially.
One person I know got light headed, and no she was not doing doubles, I think she may just be too skinny. She used to be a nurse. She said her fluid levels were too low.
Another person had hard to find veins and they sent her home with apologies because she could not donate. Her fluid levels may have been low too, as that makes it harder to find the veins.
I was okay yesterday, but I think I did not drink enough when I was home yesterday. My blood pressure was WAY low for me and my blood sugar was a bit high. Both signs that my fluid level is low. I feel a little tired.
I am drinking lots of liquids today and ate an iron rich breakfast. I put an electrolyte/probiotic powder in my big cup of water this morning. I will feel fine in a bit.
I do have one more zoom meeting with a student and some at home paperwork to get done but unless the sun comes out and blasts away I likely will not do a whole lot outdoors. It rained all day yesterday, it is cloudy/foggy today.

There are many people who cannot give blood, so I often feel that since it is easy for me I should. I like to feel good about things like that.

Yes, I drank plenty of fluids today and ate well. No sunshine, though, so I am disappointed in that.

They are paying us our full pay, and only ask that we do four hours of supportive work in return each week.

@lovinangelsinstead21 I do not feel that this has been helpful to most of the students. I worry about this fall and fear a bigger outbreak then.

Here they have gone to the extremes but it was to be expected what they do.
So its good you have been able to keep going Spain has been smashed into a thousand pieces and well so have a few other countries.

Yes, that would be a problem. You would faint on them and give them a scare.

Yes, it is important all the time but especially so with so many sick people.

I tried to donate blood three times. The first time I was turned away because I had a slight cold. The second time, the blood just wasn't flowing very much (I'd donated half a pint in the same time my friend filled a pint) and I'd blanched so they hurriedly unhooked me and sent me over to the juice and cookies. Third time, they sent me away because they thought I was undernourished (I wasn't).
So, I don't even try anymore.

For some people it is not a good idea. Yes, if you do not weigh enough they will not take your blood.

When I lived closer to a platelet center I gave those really frequently. Then for a while my health was not good, then we moved. I have never given plasma. I have given whole blood as well.

I am fine today. You cannot do this more frequently than every four months. I will prepare better next time.

I have eaten much better today and I am fine. Thanks. One thing I do drink a lot is a vegetable juice cocktail. It is full of nutrition.
