I HAD to choose ice cream since I'm bonkers for the stuff. Ice cream is a sweetened frozen food made from dairy milk or cream. To be considered ice cream in the United States a certain amount of cream must be present or it is called a "frozen dairy dessert". You may have even seen a product called "ice milk". There are now forms of ice cream that are made for the lactose intolerant; i.e., without lactose or made from milk such as soy and almond. Some other varieties and forms of ice cream are frozen custard, frozen yogurt, sorbet and gelato. The oldest ice cream reference I could find was in ancient Greece where, in the 5th century B.C., snow was mixed with honey and fruits. There is a 1744 reference to ice cream in North America: "Among the rarities...was some fine ice cream, which, with the strawberries and milk, eat most deliciously." (Wikipedia) When cheap refrigeration became common in the mid 1900s, popularity of ice cream became worldwide. Perhaps you remember when Howard Johnson's 28 Flavors and Baskin-Robbins 31 Flavors came into vogue?
