Some of these crustaceans are clawed; some species are not; and they come in a variety of colors. The most common are the bluish green or greenish brown. There are rare instances of albino, orange, red, yellow, etc., lobsters.
In North America, the lobster, prior to the mid 1900s was considered a poverty food. It was a food for servants, lower members of society and prisoners. Until well into the 1900s lobster was used for fish bait and fertilizer. Now they are highly prized as seafood and very expensive.
Lobsters can live up to 45-50 years in the wild and continue to increase in size as they age. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest lobster ever caught was in Nova Scotia, Canada, and weighed 44.4 pounds (20.15 kilograms).
Some countries have banned the practice of thrusting a live lobster into a pot of boiling water as being too inhumane. A lobster can be killed prior to cooking by electrocution with a device known as a CrustaStun.
Have you ever had lobster?

I love lobster but don't have it very often. I've heard that the lobsters don't feel anything when dropped in water but I beg to differ. When I was younger, my father cooked lobster for our family. I was in the kitchen when he dropped it in water and I heard it cry. I wouldn't eat it and never ate lobster again until about 5 years ago.

@LindaOHio That is so sad! It does seem inhumane.

The experts say yes, they do feel pain; and that's why boiling a live lobster has been outlawed in several countries.

I LOVE lobster! I plan to treat myself to a nice big lobster tail soon. When we go to Cozumel, Mexico we always have dinner at The Lobster House. Soooooo good! I read a book many years ago called The Secret Life of Lobsters. Very interesting.

When we went to Maine many years ago, my husband went crazy for the two-fers specials there. They had two lobsters for $9.95 at many of the restaurants. He'd like to go back just to eat lobster. I wonder what the two-fers cost now!!!!????

@LindaOHio A couple of summers ago there was a surplus of lobsters. The grocery store was selling them for like $5 a pound and sometimes even less. They were cheaper than balogna.

When I worked in Miami, the restaurant next to my job had a lobster special for lunch on Fridays. My boss would allow the office to take a 2 hour lunch break so everybody could go eat lunch at that restaurant. Some bosses can be very nice.
