Now how do we get down?

After my recent post of a load of hay about to fall from a cart, I thought you might enjoy this photo of a completed hay-stack. Before the advent of tractors, in the days when draught horses were used for ‘horse-power’, much land and energy was devoted to producing sheaved hay. This was later turned into chaff to feed the working horses. Few could afford the large sheds needed to store such supplies. However, the top layer of the stack was arranged in a kind of thatch, to shed water from rain and keep the bulk of the stack dry. Sometimes, late in the season, the ‘roof’ of the stack would become green from seeds that had germinated. From the size of the men in the photo, this is a very high stack. I wonder how the men got down. What do you think? Do you think they just slid down?

that is a very large haystack and yes, I would think they probably just slide down.

@JudyEv — realistically and logically — which is hardly the case — they had to climb up there. Probably smaller bales of hay as a staircase of sorts. I would think they didn’t accomplish that in one day!

@FourWalls They would have built the stack under them. Men on the ground would pitch the sheaves up (with pitchforks) and the two on top would arrange the sheaves in a pattern and gradually build the stack higher and higher. I reckon there would have been a ladder against the stack somewhere.

Maybe there is a ladder that isn't in the photo.

This is the higher stack I have ever seen. I do not believe you can slide down, there is the risk to destabilize the stack. There must be a ladder somewhere.

@JudyEv Even those that were not so high had a ladder behind to go up and down.

I'm sure there must have been a ladder on the other side. They're hardly stupid enough to jump off - although they ARE men!

I know if I were in their shoes, I would slide down and hope for a soft landing on the ground. I am safer running down a hill in the former Canal Zone in Panama.

I've never seen such a large hay stack. My brother in l aw has a cattle farm and cuts hay. I don't know how he does it but he has huge round rolls of hay laying in the field.

Most farmers use the big round bales now. They're made by machine. Sometimes the machine even puts a plastic cover over them.

@JudyEv I think my brother in law does that. I hear the virus hasn't been terribly bad in Australia. Why do you think that is?

@RubyHawk I think it is because we shut things down very quickly. As soon as there were cases, quarantines came into force.

@JudyEv Well, that's true. Even then, the ladder wouldn't have been tall enough unless the used a firetruck

Ha- I'm not sure- they must have gone up on a ladder but it would seem the ladder wouldn't have anything too solid to lean on??

They would have built the stack underneath them as they placed the sheaves. I'm sure there is a ladder leaning against that stack somewhere.
