Tallboy or shortboy?

Someone on a local Facebook Buy and Sell site wanted a tallboy. Tallboys are really just chests of drawers that are reasonably tall. We have two but they fit nicely in an alcove and we don’t want to sell either of them. However, the term struck me as a bit funny and I wondered how it came about. So then of course I had to wonder if there was a piece of furniture called a ‘shortboy’. When I searched for tallboy to find out more, I came across lowboy so I guess in that case there isn’t a shortboy. Seems a shame really. What do you think? Do you have a tallboy? Or maybe a lowboy?

I never heard those two words so I learnt something new today. In Italy we call those 7 drawers chests "Settimanali" (weekly) because there is a drawer for every day of the week.

I like Settimanali. That's really quite cute. Shortboy isn't a word of course - just tallboy and lowboy.

@Lakshman15 Mostly I'd call such pieces a chest of drawers.

I haven't head that expression before. My dressers are short boys but they have very wide and deep drawers, expensive pieces of furniture.[. I know I got these from former Mother in law but not sure how they came to roost here!

They are really useful. I love these. It looks as if there are two drawers at the bottom but it's one double-depth drawer. Ideal for blankets.

I call my old pieces tall boys cause the cats could walk under them if they liked- one is an old radio cabinet repurposed- the cabinet itself perches on tall spindled legs. I could show you this black big guy if you like.

@sallypup Those old radio cabinets were big, weren't they? My photo is a bit skewiff too as I couldn't get far enough away to get a decent photo. They are not far from the end of a bed.

Thanks. I'd be interested to see it. Old radio cabinets are often repurposed as other things.

@JudyEv - Ha ha! I never thought about a shortboy! I have a tallboy, and I have to stand on my toes to get things out of the top drawer. However, it is a great way to store all those sweaters and things! Very practical and I love the one I have. I am not on MyLot much anymore, but I thought I would check in with a few people and see how they are doing. I hope you and Vince are well. My husband had a stroke a few weeks ago, but he is recovering well. We are staying home nearly all the time, so we are not worried about Covid-19. I'm glad we do not have to go anywhere, except for my weekly trip to the grocery store.

@JudyEv - Thanks so much, Judy. Yes, my life has become complicated and I do not feel like spending too much time online. I keep up my blog, because that is where I earn most of my online income. Other than that, I just "dabble" here and there. I do like MyLot, though, because it makes it easy for me to check in once in a while with all the great people, like you, who I have met online over the years, and make sure they are still around and doing well. Remember Domestic Diva Online (Gloria)? Or Elizabeth Wallace? I live near both of them and used to see them regularly until this pandemic started. Now, we email each other, but we do not see each other.

@DeborahDiane It's hard to give up myLot completely I'm sure. I do remember those two ladies. I'm glad you are still to touch with them. Hopefully the day isn't too far off when you will be able to see them again.

I had noticed that you were 'missing' so I'm glad you're safe and staying in. I'm sorry to hear your husband has had a stroke. I guess that complicates things a little. We are both well thanks and our state continues to have very few new cases. Lately, all new cases have come from overseas. Sending my best to you both.

I guess the one I have for my clothes just to throw a spanner in the works is probably a medium boy! Neither low or tall!
