I Make Money Doing Flips!

No, I can't do back flips or gymnastics. I am referring to my small business, selling vintage and antique items at my flea market booth. I've been doing this for about three years now. I've learned so much since I started. I've been selling items that I inherited from my mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. Sometimes I purchase things at low prices and re-sell them to make a profit. That's called "flipping". I've done a lot of internet research over time to determine the the origin of many items and their value. So now I'm able to go into a thrift store or to a yard sale and determine if something is junk or actually quite valuable. I really enjoy doing this! The photo (mine) shows two items I purchased at a thrift store last weekend. I paid $2 each. The sugar bowl is Jeanette Depression glass from the 1930's/40's. The large bowl is KIG Malaysia glass (listed for over $40 on Etsy). I've priced them at $9 each. Hopefully they will sell soon! Do any of you buy or sell vintage items?

Flipping has become a big thing recently. I think it is pretty cool! I don't think I would have the knowledge to do something like that, but it is nice to see people taking things that could have just been thrown away and instead clean them up and sell them so nothing goes to waste.

@allen0187 ROI is very good because besides my Trading shop doubles as a junk shop so some items I just purchase as scrap or junk.

I've always fancied doing that, but I feared my flips would be flops. :( Good luck selling them.

Hahahaa, good choice of word @Orson_Kart! A few of my flips did become flops, I must admit.

@BloggerDi I must admit I would have priced the large bowl higher. If it's on Etsy for over $40, then I would have tried for $20. I'd hate to find my bowl suddenly appear on Etsy at $40 by my buyer.

@Orson_Kart I do tend to price my items on the low end, because I want to move them. But I really want to make as much profit as possible, so I might take your advice. I can always mark it down later if it doesn't sell. Thanks for the tip!

@RebeccasFarm Oh that's too bad. But your cost of living overall is much higher in Denver than it is my my area in SW Missouri. I pay only $40/month for a 2x10 booth (walls about 7 ft tall).

I follow Gary Vaynerchuk and his Trash Talk. He visits yard sales and flips what he buys in eBay. I do something similar with my online store.

Very interesting topic, I just found this website as I did not know what was Jeanette Depression. By the way, my Mom's name was Jeanette
Jeannette, the Glass City, produced more glass in a variety of forms than any other city in the world. Read more here...

That is so wonderful! I hope you continue to do well with your business. My husband is the collector in our house. He loves going to antique stores and collects sterling silver and oil paintings. We don't have one more ounce of space. I inherited furniture from my parents and grandmother. I only have a blonde wood dining room set to sell. My brother knows a collector, so hopefully we can unload it soon. Lots of the silver should go, too.

Thank you @DianneN. The market is "iffy" on some items and changes all the time. Furniture is selling quite well at the store when I have my booth. I hope you can sell yours soon.

I know there are quite a lot of people who make a fairly decent living doing this sort of thing, and of course the most successful ones know what has value and what does not. It pays to shop those thrift stores. Many people just see "junk" and have no idea what it could be worth... Seems like you have a knack for finding that valuable junk.
