Ageism

Ageism . . . . a new word on the block and is defined as: "prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age" Our pandemic situation in the world has made the word Ageism very real for many people over the age of sixty, especially me because I just turned sixty! "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and for the over sixties: "All work and no play makes Jack find a new place to play" - buy where? In many sports affiliations, the over 'sixties' have been told to stay at home as they are the 'vulnerable' and are at high risk in getting this dreaded virus. Golf, tennis, badminton, bowls, hiking, marathon running, working it off at the gym and many others have been forced to enforce the age restrictions . . . . so where do the over sixty sporting enthusiasts go to now? Luckily I can still dance and prance in our Ballet school, but unfortunately, it will have to be a 'sixty solo' as there aren't many of us around any more. Don't they know that to keep fit and healthy people need to do HAPPY endorphin sports and recreation? “Ageism is far too prevalent across society. Ageism fundamentally undermines older people’s participation in society and can contribute to greater isolation and loneliness.” says a reporter and truer words were never written. Ageism is going to cost many a thriving pensioner their sanity, mark my words! If I cannot play lawn bowls, I am going to join my hubby fishing! I cannot wait for the lockdown on travel to be lifted

What gets me is that they say they are doing it 'for your own good' as we need protecting!

Yes, as if we're too dumb to follow the guidelines given to us, of course there are those who won't.

I find that doctors nowadays are all too quick to put ailments down to 'age' instead of doing some thorough checking first. I'm sorry you're restricted at the moment. I guess fishing isn't a bad option.

Fishing would be a good option ...... I should have learned but I always hated all that sitting around waiting for a fish to bite.

@rebelann I only eat fish in restaurants. If I went fishing I wouldn't really want to catch any. lol I'd take a good book and maybe forget to bait the hook.

I always wanted to be older when I was a teenager. Some jobs only like young workers and would not employ a person that is older. The team that work are maybe between 20 years old and 34 years old. So a lady aged 46 years old isn't going to fit in. I know a lady that is 67 years old and she is still working. She is still paying a mortgage and this will last 3 more years. The lockdown told people over 70 years old to stay at home. I can't wait for the lockdown on travel to be lifted. It is now possible to visit some countries on a safe list. Some visits would lead to 14 days in a room alone as a family. Yes, it would be a lockdown of 2 whole weeks.

Yes, many people do discriminate against those of us over 50 and it really shows when a person is trying to get a job and the employer has a choice of hiring a 30 year old with college credentials or a 50 year old with many years of positive experience, usually they hire the 30 year old.

sadly it's going to be worse now after the pandemic. I just don't get it - some over the fifties are healthier and smarter than the young ones. anyway, who am I to decide. just venting

But it is disturbing @Inlemay I'm just glad that I'm not looking for a job, at 70 I doubt anyone would give me a second look. Probably not even a first look.

That's a new word for me too. I'm glad the YWCA opened in June so I have a place to go. I really missed swimming. I hope you enjoy fishing.

The over 65 were "discriminated" here, we were not even allowed inside the stores, we were asked to stay home... but we can pay taxes, for that we are not old enough!
