Huge Bird Nest or Maybe Squirrel Nest?

I discovered this big nest up in the trees before we left on our trip. It was on a sunny day that I was working in the yard and maybe the day I planted some new Elderberry cuttings since I was in that area of the yard. These trees are very tall and the nest is way up there. I assumed it was a bird nest, but if so, has to be a larger bird than smaller sparrows, blue birds, and robins and cardinals that I see on a regular basis. I'm thinking this is a crow, or even a hawk nest. Another possibility is a squirrel nest but it seems a bit high for even that. I just thought I would share the photo with you guys and of course ask what kind of nest do you think this is? © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved.

@kareng Keep us posted. Would be cool if it were a hawk or eagle nest.

@CarolDM I haven't seen any eagles around but do see a hawk on occasion. There is also a water source on the land behind me so a good place for a nest!

That's quite a large nest. I wouldn't know what kind of bird or squirrel would make one that big.

I'm thinking a hawk at this point. Squirrels make big nests too though.

@just4him This one disappeared after all the bad weather last week. I was hoping to find out what kind of bird built it or if it was a squirrel nest.

@kareng Oh. lol. Well, look for a very pissed off squirrel running around with a cell phone trying to make an insurance claim on his homeowner's insurance.

I don't think it is the squirrel's nest since I think they may live in the hole of the trunk. And it doesn't look like a bird's nest, too. A bird's nest will be round and flatter in my opinion. I guess it may be the ant's nest.

I haven't seen any. My luck it would be a buzzard nest! I have seen a hawk down the road. I will keep an eye on it but we may never know what kind of creature made the nest!

Do squirrels make a nest? I've never thought about what they have. I would have guessed a hollow tree as a 'home'.

@kareng Our possums, which look a bit the same, look for hollowed out tree trunks to use as homes.
