American Beauty Bush With Blooms

I have an American Beauty Bust with blooms on it. I need to go check on it as this photo was taken last week. I don't want to miss this one in bloom. I also spotted another one along the property line. I need to dig that one up and plant it in the yard. This plant was once thought to be toxic but it is not. It will cause a belly ache if you eat too many berries and especially if they are not ripe. The birds love them here and I will need to be on my toes to catch it! I have never heard of it. But I probably see them all over the place and just don't pay much attention.

I had never heard of them until I saw it here in the middle of the huge camilia bush and investigated!

@kareng It looks to be a fairly common type of plant, one that could be all around us and we just never notice or pay attention.

@kareng How would you know when the berries are fully ripe and safe to eat? That would be my fear, is not knowing the proper time to eat a berry. My luck, I would grab one that isn't ripe yet and then get sick from it.

Hmmm... I could be mistaken but I think your plant is an American Beautyberry Shrub. (Do the little flowers turn into purple berries?)

That's it! I've just always known them to be called American Beauty Bushes. I have never harvested the berries, the birds beat me to them!

@DaddyEvil Not really planning on it unless I use them for dye in soap making maybe. The birds always strip this bush before I notice that the berries are even ripe. I don't go on that side of the house very ofen!

@kareng Uhm... I hope you never find the need to harvest the berries, Karen... While they aren't poisonous to humans they are distinctly bitter. Usually, wild animals won't eat the berries until they can't find any other food in winter to eat.

I'll wait until fall if I tackle it. There are several things that need cleaning out there. I recently discovered a rose bush in there as well. And an oak tree growing. Root space is limited!

@oahuwriter I have seen those before. I have about 10 that I need to identify. One of my gardener friends sent them along with a seed trade and I'm clueless! Now I need to make a succulent bed.

@kareng Lots to do as you plan your garden. Do you know about succulents, perhaps you can identify this one. I got nowhere trying to find it in my own.

@CarolDM I have a couple of bricks down on lower branches to try and root a couple of new ones. This plant is old! I have never seen one this big before. It is now past the first floor of my house's roof!

I need to edit the title to "buds." It produces a dark purple berry.

I'm not sure if I have. I remember seeing a bush with berries on them when I was growing up. I would eat the berries. No one told me I couldn't. They were small red berries.
