Can't go up to the register until it's time to pay

At Trader Joe's, even though they have that protective screen up at the register, you are not allowed to go up to the register until the guy/girl rings everything up and it's time to pay.
I remember one day when we were shopping there a guy started complaining about that when he started walking toward the register but was stopped.
He was not happy and asked why the heck did they put that screen up for if customers are not allowed to be at the register while the stuff is scanned.
That is what I want to know.
I am not happy about that either.
If you can't be at the register you can't see what they are doing.
And if they make a mistake you won't know it until you've paid and look at the receipt.
I've shopped there many times and a few times there was a screw up.
Thankfully, it was in my favor so I did not go to complain.
But had it not gone in my favor I'd have had to deal with it after checking out rather than before the card would have been swiped.

If anything wrong happened then I would have been angry for sure

Once after we paid and I looked at my receipt I saw that the guy had rung up my sweet potatoes as regular potatoes. Regular potatoes are cheaper so I did not say anything because the mistake was in my favor. But I was shocked that he even mixed up the two. No way does a long sweet potato resemble a regular potato.

@amitkokiladitya How can you not tell a regular potato from a sweet potato? Kinda like I was buying yellow carrots once and the cashier thought it was a parsley root. Even after telling her what it was she still kept on claiming it was not a yellow carrot. They look nothing alike. Now, parsley root and a parsnip do look similar.

If they put up the protective shield then there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to go up to the register.

And I can't go up to the guy while he rings up my stuff but another store worker can be near the guy. What makes that other person different from me? He can have it but show no symptoms.

@lovebuglena Yes, that doesn't make any sense at all.

In our stores, too many are in a hurry to put the groceries, up on the checkout while someone is still paying. I say just wait, you won't get done any faster. They are supposed to be wiping down the counter, and the atm card device.
We can go to the register, and watch them ring up the items, that is not the problem. the problem is the person behind you trying to crowd you.
I think a lot of people are still very concerned with Covid, each day they tell us something different, about how this is spreading.

I've see that happen. Some people do not observe social distancing and will be on top of you. Wait your turn!

I need to see what they ring up so I can catch mistakes right away, that doesn't make any sense at all.

Doesn't make sense to me either. And that shield / screen should be sufficient to protect the cashier, especially if the customer standing by the register is wearing a mask.

I don't see any reason why you can't go up to the register.

I don't see any reason either. And if a person has to go up there anyway to pay the bill that person can potentially spread it (if positive) just being there a minute or so. Doesn't matter how long they stand at the register for.

At that store you can only see what they are ringing up if you are at the register. There is no big screen to display what is being scanned.

@piyushbhatia1 When they are done scanning everything you are allowed to go up to the register so you can pay. After you pay you get a receipt.

That’s kind of confusing. Why would they refuse to let people stand in the ewgister when they have that screen up. Well I hope they have a place for you to leave feedback so you can bring that up with them.

@lovebuglena I have read comments that on other areas it isnt the same. I know for sadtey precautions but not being able to double check the charges are a bit extreme foe me.

I think all the locations of this store do that. They are probably worried about their workers catching it than the customers' safety.

Our checkouts have screens but they don't make us stand back and wait.

If you have a protective screen than no need to now allow customers to stand by the registers.

I don't get their system too. Some protocols being implemented nowadays are out of logic. Here, married couples are not allowed to ride on the motorcycle without a barrier, hello! they live under one roof!
But the funniest thing is this: you have to show them marriage certificate, but they also allow live-in partners to ride on the motorcycle. Goodness!

My local Russian grocery store doesn't have that. They have the screen up and you go up to the register when it is your turn to check out not after stuff is scanned and it's time to pay.

That's disgusting. It's only wasting time and they can even charge more money too

I don't see how that's wasting time. However, they can over charge you even if it's by mistake and you won't know it until you've already paid and looked at the receipt. And then if anything is wrong you have to try and get your mind money. I guess doing that would be wasting time that can be used for other things.
