Foals have long legs

I was chatting with Kareng (@kareng) about a new dog her family has acquired. You can catch up here: https://www.mylot.com/post/3382455/meet-honey. We agreed that dogs grow to fit their paws meaning that large-breed puppies will have big paws as pups. I mentioned that, with a foal, the length from the ground to the knee joint doesn't increase much at all as they grow. This is one reason why foals have to spread their legs so wide to graze. I told Karen that I’d try to find a photo of a foal and I did. Let me introduce Stardust who grew up to sire a great many very useful hacks and ponies. Doesn’t he have long legs?

I have seen the thoroughbred foals here and that is also what I noticed, their long legs that looked fragile like they are not steady for walking.

It's amazing that they manage them as well as they do.

@JudyEv last year I saw a one-day old foal. It has difficulty in standing.

I knew that about foals. They look so awkward, but grow into beauties!

Kool photo. That's interesting. Some dog breeds also have to grow into their ears, Mykey was like that, as a pup he looked a lot like Dumbo.

I have used that part of the leg to estimate a horses mature height. The inches of that bone do come close to how many hands high it will stand,

Yes, it's a helpful estimation.

He looks adorable but the long legs do make him look a bit awkward.

They must be hard to manage when they are so young.

@JudyEv Yes, both he and my daughter inherited their big feet from me. In fact, when my daughter was being delivered in the hospital, the doctor's first words when she came out of the womb were "Look at those big feet!" We recorded the birth on video, so I love replaying that part to my daughter and laughing about it.

@moffittjc Haha - poor girl. Does she have trouble finding shoes to fit?

Did he inherit his big feet from you? It can sometimes to hard to find shoes to fit very big, or very small, feet.

I didn't know that about a foal, that their legs from the ground to knee doesn't increase a lot.

@JudyEv I guess that's why the foal's legs always look so awkward.

If you see a foal next to its mother, you can see that that part of the leg is much the same length.

@judyev Foals’ legs have always seemed somewhat disproportionate to their bodies. And giraffes. All very gangly.

Yes, it is but the leg from the ground to the knee won't get much longer than it is as a foal.

The foals were always very sweet and their coats while so young were more like fur than hair.
