I went, and I spent

I got around early this morning and made some phone calls that I needed to make.
Due to the answers on the phone calls, and due to hubby having a library book to turn in, we went to McPherson, first thing.
While there I spent nearly $250, but have nothing in my hands to show for it.
That is because I got my shingles shot and a Tdap.
I wanted to get them before I went back to school.
Tdap protects against tetanus, diptheria and pertussis. Two years ago one of our custodians got pertussis and was very sick. I guess your immunity there wears off. I do not worry much about diptheria. As much as I am in the yard and the sheds and messing with construction and other stuff, a tetanus shot seemed a good idea.
Shingles shows up if you have ever had chicken pox. It is stimulated by stress. We do not have any stress right now, do we? I have also known of people who broke out in shingles when they were around children who got chickenpox. I work in a school.
I will get a flu shot in September, after I give blood again. I will also get a second shingles shot sometime in the next six months.
I had toyed with the idea of not getting the shingles shot, until someone I know said her cardiologist said shingles can hurt your heart.
VA gave Bob these two shots last month.
I have had good luck with the flu shots and that is why I will continue to take it. I work in a petri dish for disease, a school.
I only had two colds last year. One may have actually been a problem from dust in the air from cutting out part of a wall. Or. . . it was the right time to have possibly been corona.
I would not want to be one of the first ones to get a Corona vaccine, but it is something I would likely consider down the line.
My pocket book did not really get hurt. I had over $1000 in my flexible spending account that I have to use up by November or I will forfeit it.
I have to spend it on health care related things. This works.

I am told we have to take two shingles shots, some months apart. I never knew that. Yes, stress can bring out the shingles, I think. And you had a lot of it.

@LadyDuck Hmm. If you have ever had chicken pox they say it lives on in your spinal column as shingles, but I think I have known of others who got it without ever having had chicken pox.

@GardenGerty Yes two doses separated by 2 to six months and I got it before getting the second. I suppose that my immune system was not at its best and the shot was what caused shingles.

I thought pertussis (it's mostly called whooping cough here) went out years ago but we had a musician here a couple of years ago. He wasn't too well but later found out he had whooping cough. We were immunised as kids but I think eventually the immunity does wear off. We've had shingles shots too. Shingles can have all sorts of nasty repercussions.

@JudyEv People of my grandmother's generation even feared the common cold because in their lifetime it had been a killer. I guess that indifference or incredulity is why in the US people are not taking the corona virus seriously.

It has just been the last few years they have been telling people to get a pertussis booster. Yes, it is called whooping cough here as well.

@GardenGerty We, meaning society in general, have got a bit blase about these nasty diseases that don't appear too often now but can still be deadly.

For about five years they have been saying immunity to whooping cough wears off in older people. It is included with the tetanus, and with all the outdoor work I do, I knew I needed that. Yes, we still get kids who get chickenpox and being around them can cause a shingles outbreak. My mom's mom used to get them and it was painful.

@AmbiePam Even after the rash disappears there can be lingering nerve pain.

I just read today that it seems covid is not as rough on people who are up to date on their other vaccines. Hopefully it is true.

Yes, you will not catch me being first in line. I will get my flu shot next month. School usually gives it free, but not until October. I tend to get it as soon as possible and not wait.

Yes, I wanted to get it done so it would work on building some immunity.
