California Declares State of Emergency!

The surprise Summer thunderstorm I was chirping about the other day turned out not to be such a good thing. Dry lightning touched off a series of wildfires, and a week-long extreme heatwave is making things worse. It's a "mostly sunny" day, but I can see the haze on the horizon and (slightly) smell the smoke. A fiery tornado was seen near the California/Nevada border. I'd heard about those but never seen one. How's the weather where you are?

I just saw the news on KRON4’s web site and was thinking about you. Hope you’re safe and have fresh air.

Thanks! It's on itys way t 105 again, but I have the pool waiting for me. The woodsmoke is getting thicker, but I can still breathe OK. I may take a Sudafed.

We've had a great week, strangely warm for August, nice, sunny, ripe blueberries, ripe raspberries, lot of mushrooms. Today we're having lots of rain, thunder, lightning, and then we'll be back to the good weather a couple of days. I think it's because school has started. The weather is always good when school starts

@TheHorse I got soaked yesterday, so need to hit the pool. I was out riding when the rain came.

I'm going to check the temperature here. I bet it's about 101 F. I'll be hitting the pool soon.

I have experienced a miniature fire tornado when burning rubbish in the garden once. Even on a small scale, it was very scary. Fortunately, we were able to douse the fire successfully - or at least, calm it down so that it produced thick clouds of white smoke to infuriate the neighbours - with grass cuttings. The weather here is building up for a watered down version of the storm which is currently approaching the west and north of the country. Today has been mostly wet and my brother-in-law and his partner visited us for lunch. Fortunately, we had rigged up what calls itself an 'Event Shelter', so we were able to practice social distancing in the proper manner. English summers normally consist of a day or two of sun interspersed with a week or so of damp and chilly.

@TheHorse You'd probably find them about the same as your Californian winters - with a little more cloud and rain.

I wonde if I would enjoy English Summers. I can't believe I've never been to England. London was my father's favorite city.

@popciclecold Thank you. I think I am safe here, but I called all of my friends who are in the danger/evacuation zones. I am waiting to hear from them.

We're having a massive heatwave, with temps about 100 F in the late afternoon. I'm not sure if I'd notice if the fires added a degree or two.

@TheHorse I'm not familiar with it. I know it's close to Vacaville I think it's called.

@LovingMyBabies I think Vacaville (not that far from me) has been having some evacuations. I'll have to check on that.

My weather is "sunny, hot, smog, don't go out between 10:00 and 4:00 unless necessary. Drink lots of water and get your salt intake" weather. At least that's how the Japanese weather announcers put it.

I'm glad they're smart enough to announce the importance of salt intake.

@TheHorse I need to be smart enough to remember it! Today my lunch is raw vegetables and an apple, plus a little cheese and gluten free bread that I made, not much salt in that. I might have to lick some salt out of the shaker when I get home.

No kidding. The last I read, five structures had been lost. There are fires in both Northern and Southern California.

It was raining the 19th, 20th and drizzling on the 21st. Some lightning but none close to us. It's been cooler than normal the last few days. We were getting temps in the high 70s during the day and are getting low 60s at night.

I see the tops of our trees moving, but it's not very gusty here now. I'm going to call a friend who lives near one of the close-by fires.

Please stay safe. It doesn't take much to spark a disaster. I've only seen fire tornados on tv, never in person

It has been nice and sunny here but now all dried out and need a bit of rain. With two tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico, I'm sure we will be seeing some liquid stuff early next week.
