What places are great to visit in the US?

Hubby told me a few days ago that he can't take it anymore and needs a break from work. He wants to go away somewhere. When I asked him where he wants to go he didn't tell me anything. It's hard to plan something when he won't tell me how many days he wants to take off work, where he wants to go, or at the very least what kind of getaway he is thinking about. There are a lot of options: renting a cabin, sight seeing, actual camping, beach getaway; going somewhere close to home, staying in NY state or going elsewhere in the country... Don't think international travel is an option right now. Maybe I will try to bring it up during dinner tonight. Not talking about it is not gonna lead to anything. I was thinking about going to Newport, Rhode Island. I mentioned it to him once but he never said anything. Maybe I will mention it to him and see what he says. What places are great to visit in the US?

You two should go to the Grand Canyon, that would be awesome! Out of all my travels throughout the country, my absolute favorite by far has been Yosemite National Park. But with all the wildfires going on in California right now, I would suggest staying away from that state for a while.

@lovebuglena Yes, Yosemite is in California. It's somewhat due east of San Francisco. Beautiful place. Absolutely stunning. That is, assuming it hasn't all been burned up in the California fires.

@moffittjc I'd love to visit it. And Yellowstone. Some day.

We've been there at the Grand Canyon. And I was actually there with my parents once as well. I'd love to visit Yosemite and Yellowstone parks. Yosemite is in CA?

Miami, Florida and while you're there go ahead and drive down to the Florida Keys. Drive back to Miami and then drive up and go to Tampa. St. Augustine and also Orlando, Florida. You'll enjoy Florida.

@lovebuglena - I usually suggest Florida because you can easily pop over to The Bahamas from there or Cuba.

I don't like the weather there but I'd visit. Only been there once and only because I was going on a cruise and it set sail from there.

@cmoneyspinner I have never been to Cuba. Not sure if I've been to Bahamas. It would have been a stop on a cruise. But don't remember.

He recognises that he needs a break but he can't tell you any more, maybe because he has guilt feelings about taking a break from work or because he's deep down scared of leaving the area he feels safe in (a fairly common feature of the lock-down experience). Perhaps the solution is to say that you feel you need a break. It might help if he can feel that he's doing it for your sake. In other words, if he has guilt feelings about taking a break from work, the idea that it's you that needs needs the break might just convince him. Another technique, of course, is to make it a 'done deal'. Make all the arrangements (but make sure you could cancel them, if necessary) and tell him to book a week or ten days (or whatever) off for such and such a date. That has sometimes worked for me (my wife is good at 'organising') but, of course, it depends on the nature of your relationship!

Since I do not work it wouldn't feel right for me to say I need a break, even though getting away would be good for me. Change of scenery that's something other than my four walls is a need right now as I am in a bit of a funk right now. Hubby definitely doesn't feel scared about leaving the area. But taking a break from work is hard because he sells cars for a living so if he takes off he doesn't make any money. He just gets a draw that gets taken back the next paycheck. Not sure booking without him would work. Especially since I don't really know where he wants to go or what he wants to do or for how long.

@lovebuglena I had a feeling that he might be reluctant to take a break from work and that that was why he can't commit to any details.

@owlwings He wanted to go away in beginning of June. Wanted to rent a cabin or house. But we couldn't settle on one. Either it was too far from our house, too big, or too expensive. Ended up not going anywhere.

This is a tough one but unless you can talk to him about it, there doesn't seem much you can do except perhaps put forward a few proposals/suggestions.

You are right. When I suggested Newport, Rhode Island (that's in the US) he said nothing.

Thank you! Hubby wanted to rent a cabin in beginning of June but it never happened. We couldn't finalize anything.

The Florida Keys -- A #1. What about Maine. You don't eat shellfish, do you? My husband loves to get the lobster two-fers there. New York City - very expensive. How about a state park in New York? Good luck!

Definitely do not want to go to Florida right now. I used to eat shellfish before hubby. Not anymore. I live in NYC so if he takes off we'd wanna get away somewhere not remain home and being around NYC.

A state park in NY is nice for a day but he'd wanna take off for more than that.
