Came across this news story while surfing the internet. A man on a whale watch boating trip in Hawaii got the surprise of his life when a thirty-ton humpback decided to give him a high-five. The 40ft-long creature had been swimming just four feet away from the boat for around half and hour.
Whales are protected species in Hawaii and boats must remain a safe distance from the whale. This humpback moved toward the vessel on its own, so by law the boat had to remain in place as to not harm the mammal. This set the stage for this incredible photo.
The humpback whale lifted its pec fin and started showing off for the tourists. Then all of a sudden the whale seemed to aim his large fin in a high-five gesture surprising a guest whose hand was raised.
What a unexpected lifetime experience for this tourist! That will teach one not to do the wave when whale watching.
Have you ever gone whale watching? I have never been but some of my friends have and the graceful movements of these huge creatures is remarkable.

I live fairly close to the ocean where they have charter boats to take you out to see them. The Captain's seem to know where the whales congregate. The fisherman have a communication system which helps. It's not guaranteed you'll see one but many times people do..

Bummer! Seems living on the coast has some benefits. Unless there happens to be a hurricane...

@dgobucks226 Yes, and once on a cruise saw them spouting water from their blowholes way out somewhere in the ocean.

That is super ooll! I did go whale watching once out of Virginia Beach, but all we saw was dolphins. Maybe I will try it again this year. It was pretty fun regardless.

Anyway I'm sure being out on the ocean was a fun time and dolphins are cool too.

What an amazing story. Those people had an experience of a lifetime. We went whale watching on the east coast many years ago. We certainly did not have a one-on-one encounter like this one!

A little too close for comfort but everything worked out all right. And as you say a thrill of a lifetime!
