A German Shepherd at the Rosh Hashanah dinner

Yesterday, was Rosh Hashanah dinner at my mother-in-law's place. There were about 19 people there. There should've have been more but they had prior engagements. As expected, my brother-in-law decided it was a good idea to bring his German Shepherd with him. You shouldn't bring a big dog with you when there is a large crowd of people. Plus, not everyone is okay being around dogs. I am afraid of dogs, mainly big ones. I do not like it when the German Shepherd comes near me. I always tell him to go away and try to move away from him myself. Yesterday, he did something he's never done before—lick my feet. Yuck! I had to wipe them with a napkin. And then he did it again. Turns out his cousin is afraid of dogs as well. She was freaking out when he approached her and more than me. This reminded me of a previous gathering at the apartment where a friend of their family that came over was terrified of dogs and the German Shepherd was there. She would freak out big time when the dog came near her. When she moved to the other side of the room the dog would follow her. The whole night the lady wouldn't leave the couch to go pee as she was afraid the dog would follow her... Yesterday, the dog decided it was a good idea to sniff the food on the table and lick the food on one of the plates. I've never seen him do that before. I would've taken the whole plate off the table and would have trashed everything on the plate just to be safe. However, hubby just removed the few pieces that supposedly the dog licked or even bit into and put the plate back on the table. Now, I am not sure if that's what did it but my brother-in-law decided to take the dog back home. That was a great idea! I did not want that dog around. And his cousin probably didn't want it there either. Plus, he is not allowed to eat food of the table. He only eats dog food. So, it was for the best that he was not there.

Licking the food on the plate or licking my foot?

Oh my goodness, I am also afraid of dogs and I would have been unable to eat, all the food should have been trashed after the dog licked.

@lovebuglena Exactly, if you think what dogs lick, this is disgusting. My niece had a golden retriever, we asked her to close the dog in her room when she invited us for lunch. I cannot stand to be licked and I feared she could lick our dishes.

@LadyDuck When hubby and I go to this parents' house for dinner, his brother always brings the dog, even though he knows I am afraid of it. And he never locks it in the bedroom. He lets it wander around.

I agree. Hubby told me the dog licked only a few pieces and he threw those out. But he might have not seen everything the dog licked or even chewed.

I wouldn't have eaten from that plate after the dog even sniffed it. I think it was very rude to bring the dog in the first place.

@lovebuglena I agree completely. He might think it is one of the family but nobody else does.

Rude and not very smart. It would have been a different story if he lived with his parents and had the dog. He wouldn't have been able to get rid of the dog then. But seeing as he lives in his own place, bringing the dog should not have even been considered.

A large dog has no place at a large gathering. I love dogs; but he's too big in a crowd of people.

You are right. It's crazy to even consider bringing the dog to such a gathering. i wonder if he asked his parents if he can bring the dog or if he didn't and just took the dog with him.

It was definitely great when the dog was not there. The dog shouldn't have been there in the first place.

@lovebuglena I know for most eateries don't allow pets like dogs to their place.
