Each fall I put out a feeder on the deck. I order big bags of the whole unsalted peanuts for the birds. All kinds of birds will visit through the winter.
I try to setup my camera on the tripod and get photos through the patio doors.
Snapped this blue jay ready to dive in for a peanut. They will usually only take one peanut at a time.
Very cool to sit here and watch them as I type on the deck. I never know what bird I will see next.

Great picture. Do you ever put out peanuts for the chipmunks? They are hilarious because they fill their cheeks so full until they're about to burst! :-)

@CarolDM Do the cats go outside? They may keep the chipmunk population down.

@LindaOHio No, they are both indoor only due to being declawed (when I rescued them, they were already declawed).

@toniganzon Most of them. But here, in Tennessee, we have many year round birds. But they will raise their young elsewhere, in someone's yard many times. I will go for months, sometimes all summer without being some of these birds, they are off raising their babies. Then they return to the peanuts in the fall.

That is nice that you take such good care of all your birds! I'm sure they appreciate having food throughout the fall and winter.

@CarolDM So you only use peanuts? Do you put out any sunflower or other small seeds?

@moffittjc As the season progresses I usually add a few seeds. But they attract the sparrows, which I do not like. But no matter what I put out, they show up and even try to eat a peanut.

I miss blue jays. Its odd but true: magpies East of the Cascade mountains where I am now and Jays on the West side. Three large squads of Canada geese flow low last night. I sat on my deck swing and watched and listened to their passage.
