We take a drive up Mt Nameless

Just outside Tom Price in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is Mt Nameless. The aboriginal name is Jarndunmunha. Apparently, no-one thought to ask what the aborigines called it so it goes the moniker of Mt Nameless. Tom Price is the highest town in Western Australia at 2,451 feet (747 metres) and Mt Nameless is another 1,500 feet (1,098 metres) above that. It is the highest point in the state that can be reached by 4WD (four-wheel drive). It was a very rough, steep and rocky track but we made it to the top, giving us a fantastic view of Rio Tinto’s mining operations below. The tower is, I think, some sort of communications tower. We bypassed the road to Useless Loop today and a few days back we crossed over Considerable Creek which also made us smile. Australia certainly has some unique place names.

As I noticed the name Mt Nameless I thought if a myLot user got her username from that. Interesting photos.

I wish I could claim credit for the place names but unfortunately I can't. Some other wag got to name them first. Here is another one I love.

@JudyEv I've just realised 'you' meant 'Australians' and not 'me' in particular.

@JudyEv This is so, but I’m sure you would be excellent at giving geographical features and towns weird names all on your own!

WA has a lot that end in '-up' which is supposed to mean a place of water.

You can almost hear the frustration that must have been felt in naming such a place.

What beautiful landscapes! I admire your adventurous spirits. I might have been too scared to take that steep road to the top of the mountain.

well worth the nail bitin' road to reach such :) 'tis most interestin', the landscape that surrounds such a beauty. prolly quite a stunner when the spring wildflowers're'n bloom. does make ya wonder how thingies got their name, what folks'd been thinkin'. loose translations perhaps? oklahoma 's quite a few - toad suck, lotawatah, nowata, etc. 'bsolutely love the 'useless loop', lol.

We've moved a few hundred kms south now and it's obvious the wildflowers here have been stupendous. There are still a lot out now and we'll be checking them out today.

@crazyhorseladycx I don't think Vince has put any photos of wildflowers on the website but it's probably a good idea.

What great views. Mt. Nameless is somewhat higher than the UK's highest peak Ben Nevis which is about 1400m high. I think the silly place names must be a product of your colonial past. We have some corkers in England. Great Snoring, Curry Mallet, Scratchy Bottom, Pity Me, Tarring Neville to name but a few.

@JudyEv Well England's highest peak is under 1000m high so England is like a billiard table. More rolling hills than soaring peaks! In 2018 we climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike (England's highest) and Snowden (Wales' highest). While Scafell Pike is the smallest it was actually the hardest to climb. I suppose we have to be the best at something even if it is just silly names.

It seems neither of our countries have too many very high mountains. I think England wins hands down when it comes to funny names.

For many, many years, the history and story of the aborigines were just ignored. It's very sad but thankfully now things are changing a little.

We feel quite safe. Lots of places have hand sanitiser at the doors and marks on the floor for social distancing but mostly we're outside.
