I think you'd call this 'stuck'

I wrote yesterday about felling a tree and cutting it up for use next winter in our tile fire. You can catch up here if you missed it: Vince used a chainsaw to fell it and wanted it to fall in a relatively open area. At on point, he jammed the saw and had to use wedges to free it. The three was threatening to fall the opposite to what he wanted but in the end it came down where it was supposed to. I was reminded of two trees in the bush behind us where people have tried to cut down a tree but they didn't fall where they were supposed to. As the supporting trees grow, the cut ones get further and further off the ground! You can see its stump on the right. The photo was taken a few years ago. I must go and have a look one day and see if they’ve come down and/or brought the support tree down with them.
In the bush just outside the boundary of our property in Donnybrook, Western Australia, is – or rather was – a dead jarrah tree. Vince has had his eye on it for...

Hubs makes sure they fall the right way. Our son helped him a couple of weeks take a big tree down and avoided taking a stone wall down. The trees in the woods have gotten hung up on each other when they fell by themselves, but oh, well.

@DianneN I absolutely love stone walls I’m glad they didn’t drop the tree on it. Care to share a photo of the stone wall with us? I saw a gorgeous one today I wish I had stopped to take a photo!

Some are really proficient at making them fall in the right place. I'm glad your husband managed to dodge taking out the stone wall.

Trees will do what they want. While you'd like them to fall a certain way, as long as no one was hurt, right?

perhaps 'twas the 'mother tree' 'n the other 'twas tryin' to save her :) nah, i aint nuts, they've 'ctually proven that many species 'f trees 'speak' to each other, share nutrients. hopefully the 'catcher' 's come to no harm.

@judyev That would be so frustrating - just out of reach after all that effort. Glad yours turned out ok.

How strange looking. Seen fallen trees balanced on others, but nothing like this

@Ronrybs True. The one we chopped down didn't have any hollows in it. The white ants (termites) were just starting to get into it.

That's kind of cool how the stuck branch is growing up with the tree. Isn't mother nature interesting?

@JudyEv If it was the same person, may be it's not bad luck, that person must learn how to cut a tree.

When we took out trees, Mike was always able to get them to go where he needed them to be. I am amazed at all that he is able to do.

Putting a tree where you want it when it falls is not all that easy. When the lot next door was cleared there were a couple of Spruce trees that were more than a meter in diameter. I was impressed by the men who took it down. They had tied a cable to the upper part of the tree, used a crane to pull it in the direction they wanted then cut away. (Yeah, that was cheating, but considering there were three houses at risk if it went wrong, I do not blame them.)

There is a great video clip of a guy dropping a tree between a house and a shed where you wouldn't think it would even fit! He does it so neatly but boy, if he'd got it wrong it would have been a disaster.

@cperry2 I'm sorry for your wife. We never take down living trees unless there is a very good reason for it.

@JudyEv My wife was having a very hard time with losing the giant tree so we went for a hike in a forest near here so she did not have to watch.

We had a huge branch in our woods just hanging there for years. I finally had our tree man get it out, it fell during a hurricane.

We have one near our Music Shack. It tried to fall during a storm but now just has a very pronounced lean. Another tree is holding it up too.

They often have a mind of their own. I had a close family member that had one fall on top of her once. She survived with a fractured ankle. You cannot ever be 100% sure they will fall where you want them to. Glad you were both safe.

I would often go for a walk after a storm to check out if any had blown down. A couple we were able to get to with the tractor and carryall.
