A new recycling initiative for our state

We’ve invited friends for dinner so we need to go to town for a few things. We’re also going to take a heap of plastic and glass bottles to a new recycling place. Our state has just started giving a 10c rebate on some articles. Glass stubbies and some plastic bottles can now be handed in at special centres and a rebate will be given. Maybe your country already does this.
When we visited Germany, we were impressed with units in supermarkets where people could dump their bottles and receive instant cash back. We’re not quite so sophisticated in Australia but it is hoped that this new initiative will help reduce the amount of rubbish alongside roadside verges. When we were taking photos on a bush track we came across a guy picking up bottles. He said they were worth money now so he was out collecting.
With luck, we’ll get enough cash back to treat ourselves to an ice-cream on the way home. Life is good.
The photo is of a collection of miniature bottles we once had.

We have the same system as Germany in our supermarkets, we receive something for the glass bottles, nothing for plastic, batteries, light bulbs... we have to separate everything. I think we should receive something for our "work".
I envy the small Glenfiddich bottle inside its container.

Jay has started collecting plastic for recycling, but we're not paid for this.

@JudyEv I think it's a good idea, to pay individuals for doing this. It's more of an incentive, that everyone will find rewarding:)

@kobesbuddy Hopefully there will be less litter along the roads although people still chuck out paper items.

'tis brilliant they're doin' such. 'nfortunately here there's few plastics they'll take (#1 'n 2), heavy cardboard - no glass 't all, no paperboard. steel cans 'n aluminum not worth the drive 'cross town. the latter 2 the 'nly one can make a few pennies, not 'nough to pay fer the gas. the latter 'tis 'lright though 's we know some homeless folks (with bicycles/attached carts) who're thrilled to get 'em added to their collection.
hope ya got those ice creams!

I have a collection of those miniature drinks and they beautifully decor the bar of my husband. I find them very cute. Here too people sell newspaper and plastic bottles for some cash. Glass bottles don't get good value but many artists buy it at cheaper rate and use it for beautiful artistic creation.

@JudyEv Here one NGO runs school for poor children and they provide quality education to underprivileged ones. The young couple who run this school take fees in form of plastic and paper waste. They have beautiful artistic work around campus using some of these waste. Rest they recycle.

We have refundable bottles here. Not all are marked for refunds though. I wish that every bottle, including milk and other cold beverage bottles would be marked for refund. It would keep so much out of the trash.
We are supposed to separate the trash for recycling, not everyone does this. I have done this for a long time. It takes so little time to wash out a container and put it in a bin. I do have to break down my cardboard. That isn't a difficult thing to do either.

That have that in some states here in the US but not others. Sadly, my state does not have that.

@JudyEv yeah, we can devote lots of time to it when we are making money as little as it might be.

The Glenfiddich with a little in it is still sitting in our bar. I'm afraid you're out of luck where whiskey/whisky is concerned.

@JudyEv I've been collecting bottles, glasses and cans since this started. I've been twice so far to hand them in but I go to these two dudes who hand count them. Haven't been to the machines yet. Apparently it takes a long time to do with the machines.
The miniature bottles are cute!

Here's the thing. When I was a kid, we recycled. Only we didn't know it. All we knew was that if we returned soda bottles we got 2 cents for each bottle. I only needed to bring two bottles and I got 4 cents and bought 8 oatmeal cookies! LOL.

Some of the states have “deposits” on plastic bottles, and you receive a refund when you turn them in. The 2-liter bottle I have in front of me says seven states give a 5c rebate and two have 10c. In the “old days” when soft drinks came in glass bottles you paid a deposit on them and got the money back when you brought the empties back to the store.
Here in Kentucky, or in the “big city,” we have recycling bins where we put our plastic bottles, soup cans, newspapers, etc. the city picks it up once a week.

Years ago, there was a rebate on soft drink bottles. Kids would pinch them from the back yards of shops and take them in the front door for a bit of pocket money. lol
We have a recycling bin which is picked up once a fortnight but there is no money involved. It will take stuff that this new centre won't.

Thanks. We did - there was just enough! So now I know how many bottles and cans it takes to get enough for an ice-cream.

I gather it doesn't happen now? We went with Damian to a depot a time or two and put the various glass and plastic into bins.
