Broom and gold.... Festival of lights Diwali..

Good afternoon from this side of the planet
. It's 3:30 afternoon here and I am taking a bit of rest. Most preparation done for the grand festival of light tonight.
Wishing everyone a Happy Diwali. Light is a symbol of inner enlightenment and spiritual empowerment. Wishing all mylot users here more empowerment and enlightenment
.
In the evening we have grand puja( prayers) for Laxmi ( Goddess of wealth). We worship Ganesha ( elephant headed God) along with her. Ganesha symbolises wisdom. And it is believed that all wealth and prosperity without wisdom is a recipe for moral and ethical destruction. So Ganesha( wisdom) has to accompany Laxmi ( wealth).
The celebration began on Thursday. It was the day of Dhanteras. Different people observe it in different ways. It's a day of purchase of metals( symbol of prosperity). People buy metals( copper, steel, silver, gold etc) according to their budget. Some also have a tradition of getting new broom on the day. The old broom is discarded. Diwali signifies cleanliness both physical and on spiritual conscious level.
So I got a broom, one silver article for my temple and a gold coin this year.
Now I will go and make rangoli( floor decoration design) for my entrance door. The one in balcony is done by my daughters. Post that I will get ready for evening pooja and celebration. I will definitely share the finished rangoli design in next post maybe by tonight before bedtime.
Meanwhile I leave you with this image. It's a rangoli made of flowers. I have made it in shape of Lord Ganesha. I am going to offer my pooja putting my idols here.
Catch you later. Hope all well with you and everyone having a good weekend.

Happy Diwali Arunima !
Your post is very interesting and informative, I learned a lot, thank you !
Britons buy a new broom when they move, to have a new start and get rid of their previous problems. I wonder if your tradition of buying a new broom is old or has been inherited/adapted from the British ?
Your "rangoli" looks very nice, congrats.

I like your flower rangoli. I had never seen one made of flowers before. Thank you for sharing your customs. Many groups of people have a festival of light in this time of year.

Thanks for your kind appreciation. I am glad that you liked the design.
British and many European countries have a tradition of getting a new broom on new year. I am sure that it's not come from there. Our ancient scriptures and mythological literature mention celebration of Diwali and they are thousands of year before British Invasion here. Our scriptures mention Lord Krishna celebrating Diwali.

@arunima25 Did your scriptures mentioned the broom
? When two civilizations are in contact, they may exchange things including in the religious domain. I have studied that for Celts and Romans, but it is also very present between Christianism and other religions since the beginning, and I read a few pages about Jesuits adopting religious customs from Hinduism to convert people in India. I don't want to hurt your beliefs, but I don't think that there is something like a religion having not had interactions with others. We are speaking only of a broom, it is not that important anyways.

It's a beautiful rangoli. I have never seen one like it before. You have chosen and arranged the flowers perfectly. I have to stand back and half close my eyes to see the Lord Ganesh. I didn't know that Ganesh figured in the Diwali celebrations (doesn't he have his own festival, earlier in the year?) but why not! - he's such a happy god, isn't he!
Happy Diwali to you!

Yes there is a separate Lord Ganesha festival of Ganesh Chaturthi during Sept-Oct.
Yet Lord Ganesha - Vighanharta or the remover of obstacles along with Goddess Laxmi are worshipped during the festival of Diwali.

Thanks for your appreciation. This design was inspired by one of my friends work. I am happy that you like it. Ganesha symbolizes wisdom and is always worshipped before any other God. It's believed that he removes obstacles with wisdom. So for any celebration or new beginning we revoke Ganesha first. And we do have a grand celebration and festival that is fully dedicated to him.

Happy Diwali Festival.
Thank you for explaining the meaning of this celebration, interesting to see how we have similar traditions even during different times of the year.
We buy a new broom at the beginning of the year, a clean home is a sign of health and prosperity.

@arunima25 Cleanliness is considered "purity" in our culture and this is why we wear white dresses during some ceremonies.

You are right. There are so many similarities in different cultures. And cleanliness is considered next to Godliness. It also points to inner spiritual cleanliness on a deep note.

@JWMILLER We think it is a nice area as it's not hot, dry and arid as much of Australia is - or is portrayed to be. COVIC has given many of us more time to catch up with entertainment I think. I hope your country is able to get itself back an an even keel now the election is over.

I hope that you enjoyed the Diwali thoroughly.
We had some travel. It was not so enjoyable this time with requirements like having mask all the time while driving and heavy sanitizing.
We did make rangoli at home and lit diyas.
Of course, some good food and the sweets followed.

Yes the mind was quite stressed. One or two days I even had bizarre dreams as well. I hope that things get back to normal.
It is good that you keep health conditions under tab.

I know travel or going out has lost all its fun with these new safety measures and staying safe and alert all the time. I guess the mind is not relaxed to have fun when we travel.
Well Diwali is not complete without diyas, good food and sweets. I crossed my limit for sweet intake this time. Good that I could bring back my sugar levels to normal in day time after it spiked.

All going well. Good to see you back. My elder one is in 11 and younger one in 9 grade
This year due to pandemic we are all working from home. So I have increased my working hours, got some extra responsibilities there and have become full time employee teacher. Once things go back to normal, I will go back to my earlier role. That's what I have made clear to administration.
Hope that you are more here now and we can catch up

It's a festival of light... So whole country is lighted and decorated the way it's there in your place during Christmas. In India even Christmas is jubilant. Diwali is a big festival and it's quite glorious one.
