Caught on the hop on video

It’s been baby kangaroo season for a while here. The little heads were just starting to emerge from bulging pouches as we were leaving for our holiday to the north of Western Australia. When they first start being tipped out of the pouch, the joeys are very ungainly and I was very keen to get a video of the little ones learning to balance and to find their feet. However, most of the mothers don’t come close enough to the house for me to video their youngsters. This morning, however, I did manage to capture some footage of the little one. It is quite strong and sturdy, not as young as I had hoped, but still very cute. Towards the end of the video, it comes almost onto the verandah and is only two metres from where I was peeking between the closed curtains. The top photo is from last year and the joey is younger than the one I captured today. The video is one minute 27 seconds long. I hope you enjoy seeing this little creature. The video is one minute 27 seconds long. I wonder what life holds for it?

That was great to watch I never realized that they are sort of kneeling when they are resting.

The little ones find it hard to balance for a start and nearly topple over forwards sometimes. This one has it all worked out.

@thelme55 Have I? I had no idea. I'll try to fix it but don't bother revisiting. I'm just glad you mentioned it.

You'd wonder how they fit in a pouch, that's for sure. You often see them with their legs poking out. This cropped photo shows the strong claws they have, too.

That was a really kool video. I knew they used their tails to help them balance but I this really showed how they did that. Thanks for sharing

Amazing! Thanks so much for posting the video. I still can't get over the fact that you have kangaroos in your yard. I guess they're as common to you as some of our animals are to us.

I think of them as similar to your deer. They're a menace on the roads and to farmers - and some like to hunt them while others think they are cute. So kangaroos and deer have a few similarities.
