On My Own

This was my view earlier today at 1:00 in the morning. I couldn't sleep although I was tired. Not just physically but mentally as well. Been living on my own but under my own terms. Now recently forced to stay here in my condominium away from my family because there was a CoViD-19 scare at work. As what I've written before, got back to my previous work but we were asked to work onsite. Assurances were made that all safety and health protocols will be taken. Well, the bare minimum was done and it wasn't comforting. Monday came and went and obviously, coming to the office and going home was harder than expected. Never mind if the bosses had their own cars and left earlier than usual to avoid the rush hour traffic. I left the office on the dot and spent at least an hour waiting for a cab in the taxi bay. Grab was an option but it was a costlier one. If I were to take Grab going to the office and going back home, I would allot half of my monthly salary to just transportation expenses. Not going to happen. So Tuesday went by, the team still made it to work even though we faced the same obstacles going to work and would likely face the same one going home. There was a commotion after lunch as one of the staff said she is not feeling well. She was told to stay in the clinic and wait for the nurse. She was later sent home. She exhibited symptoms of CoViD-19 infection. Take note, there were no managers onsite on Tuesday and it almost took a full hour before the sick employee was given the go signal to go home. Tuesday night a message from one of the call center managers was forwarded to our group chat. It reassured everyone that the sick employee was not infected and that sending her home was a mere precaution. How they come up with this conclusion is beyond me. Furthermore the message said it is business as usual on Wednesday. So Wednesday went by but there was some nervous energy around the office. Not everyone thinks that the sick employee only got a simple flu. By after lunch, we were met via Zoom by the call center manager and the HR manager that we will be resuming back to the work from home set-up as they considered the difficulties the employees faced going to and from the office. Thursday was business as usual and everyone was enjoying the work from home set up. Around 10:00am I got a notification that I was included in a group chat with the name 'Isolate!'. I knew then and there what had happened. The sick employee sent word that her symptoms progressed. Everyone in the gc was panicking and was demanding answers. I told my parents what had happened and immediately packed my bags and things and left for my condo here where I'm staying now. I have another condo nearer my parent's place but I do not have an internet connection there so this was the only option. It was a tense couple of days as we waited for word on our sick colleagues CoVid-19 test results. We did not hear any other update from management. Our colleague got tested Thursday afternoon and the results came back today. Good to know that she is negative. Seems all is well but we got word earlier that another colleague of ours who was with us onsite last week is now experiencing symptoms. I guess, I'm staying on my own much longer.

@hereandthere washable. Disposable PPEs are a waste of money in my opinion.

My sis and bro in law have both been working at home for months...however, their office is open in case they have to retrieve files or something. I know my bro in law would like to retire, but they will probably wait until their youngest is out of college will should be in the spring..They might wait until he has a job actually and moves out..so not so many people in the house.

Same thing in our office. I doubt though if someone would bother visiting and working onsite after what had transpired.

I doubt it. Heard from the grapevine that they want to resume work onsite as soon as possible.

@allen0187 that is because your officemate was tested negative. But they did not realized the hardships of commuting since there are no public transportation available except for grab and taxi

@rakski true. Now, we got another advisory to continue with our self-quarantine because the new strains of CoViD-19 are taking at least 11 days to show up. My colleague who tested negative is still in self-quarantine at her home.

Sorry to hear about the difficult situation. Good thing that the result was negative. I hope it goes the same for the other one too and I hope that the management would finally stick to the work-at-home set up. It is really more safe for now.

It only takes one infection to contaminate a workplace. Be safe. I know being on your own and isolated is not the most liked choice, but it does keep you more safe.

Not ideal but at this point, the only acceptable option for me. Anything else would be putting others at risk.

I hope so too. Everyone in the team is pinning to get tested but so far the management isn't budging. They haven't even contacted us yet.

It's best to stay home and work from home. This virus is a sneak. We are waiting to see if our son develops symptoms. 4 people who work for him now have covid. He was at a meeting with 2 of the 4. I've been on pins and needles. Needless to say, you are wise not to be near your parents.

Hopefully, your son doesn't develop symptoms. I'm on the seventh day of a 14-day self-quarantine. Might extend it further since I've been reading reports that in the most recent cases of infection, the virus wasn't detected until after the 11th day.

It's best to be safe on your own than face possible infections from the virus. I'm glad the colleague came back with negative results. Working at home is the best option. Pretty view.

@allen0187 It sounds very hard for you and I am sorry about that. That is too bad because of the situation and also the employee that was sent home that you should be able to work at home. Good for you go to your condo and stay there. It is not safe for you out there. Glad to read that she was negative. Now, another thinks they have the symptoms. I am sorry that it is hard for you but you are better off because of the situation at your work place that you should stay where you are.

things have become like this, making us afraid of this pandemic virus, hopefully we can remain steadfast in carrying out our work, enthusiasm can arise from ourselves if we are sincere in living it, hopefully those of you who are far from family can meet them soon
