I'm definitely an outdoor person

I’m an outdoor kind of person. This is becoming more and more apparent to me as the years go by. I sit at my desk and look out of the window and - unless the weather is really horrible - I think ‘I wish I was outside!’ It’s not that I hate my job - I enjoy my work. But sitting at a desk for hours is just not in my nature. I find myself wanting to go outside even if I’ve only just come in! Today for instance I went out in the morning to let the chickens out and put out food for the birds. I worked for an hour or so, then I met up with a friend (and her dog) and we went for a walk in the woods for about an hour and a half. Then as soon as I got back I went out in the garden to dig up some spare plants I had promised someone on Freegle. Then I came in, settled at my desk with a coffee and looked out of the window and thought ‘I wish I was outside!’ All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2020.

Since giving up work last December I've got used to spending a lot of time outdoors walking the dog so I know exactly what you mean. Sadly I'm about to come out of retirement so can look forward to 8 hours per day stuck indoors for the foreseeable future.

@WorDazza Lucky you! Hope you enjoy it. Just make sure you don't accidentally let slip any 'trade secrets' from your previous employer.

@Fleura Same as I was, developing software for the automotive industry. I'll be working as a contractor for one of my previous company's competitors. Wasn't looking for it. I just got a phone call making me an offer I found difficult to refuse.

It's definitely better all round than sitting indoors, including for mental health which is the hot topic these days!

@Fleura that'd be fer certain. so many folks, e'en young'uns battlin' depression, anxiety 'n a host 'f other mental health issues. they ne'er go outdoors, e'en those who've space fer such 'n 'tis 'llowed :( 'nstead, they sit'n their homes with their gadgets 'n such jest gets worse. i feel many'd benefit if'n they connected with nature 'nstead.

@crazyhorseladycx You are right, but of course for a long time 'people like us' were considered a bit crazy. Now though, more and more studies are demonstrating the benefits of being outdoors and connecting with the rest of nature. Even just seeing a tree out of the window has been proven to be beneficial!

I like to walk, but I am an indoor person. I like to stay at home, to bake, to do some little crafting, to paint when I am in the mood.

@LadyDuck I do enjoy the different seasons, I'm not sure I would like to live in a place where it is always pretty much the same.

I find I like different activities at different times of year. In the summer I basically like to be in the garden. In winter my thoughts turn more towards craft activities by the fire.

I'm glad you could get out as much as you did. I find myself wishing the same thing.

@Fleura So, do I. It will be a while though as I continue to heal from my knee replacement surgeries.

There are some occupations I would really struggle with. Submariner, for example.

@WorDazza No, it really would be like a prison. You would just have to focus on getting through each 'tour' I suppose.

@Fleura I worked on the development of Submarine Command Systems back in the late 80s. My boss was an ex submarine captain. He loved the outdoor life. I have no idea how he spent so many years in an underwater spam tin without going completely mad. Although he was a little strange!

I tend to prefer doing something outside as well. It might be part of the reason, aside from the cold and the potential for that ugly white stuff, that I despise winters so much. As for work, I don't hate my job either. I just don't want to do it anymore. lol

@Fleura Minnesota I think is colder than CT but it has been unseasonably cold these last few weeks.

Ha ha I know what you mean - I lived in MN for three years! I actually loved the winters there, but I missed the British springs.
