Is this how a dog feels?

I’ve often wondered what it is like to be a dog, always having to do as you’re told (I’m not very good at that), coming and going at your master’s beck and call. But most of the time dogs seem pretty happy with their lot, and the more orders they get, the happier they seem to be. A well-trained dog with a job to do - think of a working sheepdog or a sniffer dog or a gundog - seems about as happy as could be with a job well done. In contrast a badly-behaved untrained dog left to its own devices doesn’t appear particularly happy. I got an idea of how this might feel the other day. There is a pair of robins living at the bottom of our garden and every time I go out to do anything in the veg. patch, one or both of them appears within seconds in case my activities turn up anything interesting. They are obviously quite used to my presence because they come really close - one even took a worm from my hand, a few times I've come close to stepping on one, and another day I almost watered it with the watering can! Often, as soon as I go out, I will hear a little flutter of wings and then a soft little whistling song (not the full-throated song, but a gentle whistle that the robin can make without opening its beak) and immediately I look around for it and then start to dig about and look for some tidbits a robin might appreciate. And then it dawned on me that these robins have got me trained! They sing me a little song, and I find them some food. And I am more than happy to do so into the bargain - in fact it really brightens my day! Maybe this is how a dog feels when it responds to commands to please its master? Being a cat person, I do wonder about being a cat. Doing your own thing and only appearing when it is time to eat!

I much prefer dogs to cats as dogs will treat you as king whereas cats expect you to treat them as such. The robins obviously have you well trained!

But I enjoy serving my Kitty Queen. And she knows, or is trying to learn, what is OK and not OK. We're always "negotiating."

it is said dogs are pleasers, while cats do as they please. it's amazing how at ease the robins are with you.

@hereandthere Robins are incredibly friendly, the two I have in the garden comes to our balcony and look inside if I "forget" to add seeds to the birds feeders.

I am convinced that, at some level, cats want to please. But they put on a big show of being independent. None of us are independent. We all need each other. To any cats reading this: I am calling your bluff.

Those robins do have you trained. Dogs like it when they are trained and get a treat for a job well done.

What an interesting point of view. I am not trained by any wild life at this time, only by my cats.

I have to robins living in our garden, those are the friendliest birds I know. We "talk" a lot when I work outside, they chirp, I reply, they come close to me, when I have a basket to collect something they get inside to inspect the content. The robins got me trained as well as the two cats of my neighbors.

Great post! I think we all enjoy knowing "what we're supposed to do." A dog likes knowing that its supposed to herd your sheep, or retrieve you bird, or just play fetch with you. my mantra with animals is "I do not want to eat you." Once animals (including humans) establish that, they can work together on how to please/help each other. We're ALL training each other at every moment!

Animals can train us within seconds. We are too foolish to realize it until it’s too late. Love your discussion!

How lovely that the robin actually took food from your hand. Yes, I think they have you trained! Lots of pets manage to train their owners - to feed them, let them out - or in. And we think we're in control!!
