The Horse gets to interact with one of his own!

Since my horse passed away, five years ago, I haven't had the chance to interact with "my own kind" that much. The stable where she lived shut down, and my horse friends were dispersed all over the Bay Area. Yesterday, on a hike with a friend, we passed an older (meaning a bit older than me) Mexican man on a horse. I asked the man if I could say hi to his horse and he said "Si." I sniffed the horse's nose, pulled gently away, and then massaged his lips, which were wet and green (his owner had obviously let him graze along the way) with the back of my hand. The horse said (in Horse) "Glad to meet you as well." I asked the man, in English, what kind of horse his was. He paused, and then said "Quarter." I told my friend, who is not a horse person, "Look for a big butt!" Then, to the man, "Mine was a Morgan. Both dependable breeds!" The man smiled and said, "Morgan. Es bueno!" I said "Gracias," and ended the interaction, patting the horse's sweaty butt as I walked past him. I asked my friend if he wanted some horse saliva, still glistening on the back of my hand. he said, "No." It's a small thing, and I hate to be what my German MyLot friend would probably call equi-centric, but I enjoy any chance I can get to chat with other horses. Is there a special "group" (human or otherwise) that you rarely get to interact with, and are delighted when you have the chance to?

I can see no problem with being equi-centric. If more people were equi-centric, the world would be a better places. Possibly smellier, but who cares?

@TheHorse None of my ponies are very good at social distancing, so whenever there's a human around they try to get as close as possible. So wearing a thick jacket when scratching them is a good idea.

My thoughts exactly. Needless to say, I love the smell of horse poop.

That’s sweet and touching. I feel that way with kitty cats.

I like to at least say hi to any doggies and cats that are interested when I visit someone's house.

@TheHorse We met our neighbor's rescued doggies today. He got them yesterday. I love dogs, too.

If you were in Europe, would you be glad to meet another Canadian? When I was in Paris, I met some people busking (playing music with an open guitar case). They turned out to be from Martinez CA, about seven miles from where I live. It was fun to talk music with "neighbors"...in Paris.

@TheHorse That's a theoretical question, and in theory I know I'd not be there, so No.

If I admit to ecqi-centricity, does that make me a "bad person"?

So did you analyze the horse? I am drawn to horses. I wish I could take back my knees and ride again.

@TheHorse I'm glad you can still ski. Anything that has to do with balance and weight on my knees is off for me- watch a Western and see how cowboys jump down from those horses. I can no longer jump like that.

I don't think my knees could handle skiing. But horses I'd be OK with. I kept my conversation with the horse friendly and superficial. But he did tell me he was happy with his human.

@sallypup I can still jump fairly well. But I think skiing would be hard on my knees.

We have a draft, draft Percheron, four quarter and a donkey. All have huge different personalities and spoiled. One mare is almost 30. I got her for my daughter when the mare was only 4. It will be a huge sad day when she passes.

My girl lived to be 35. I could tell she was getting old, but I still rode her (bareback, near the end).

@TheHorse My oldest was an appy and he lived to 38. Over the years I lost them but most were elderly. One at 33, two at 27.

I had a pony we bred ourselves. I met him the day he was born and was with him at the end. I don't suppose I'll ever have a relationship like that again.

Well, not really, I love cats and I interact every day with two cats. I have to approach every cat I meet and try to pet the cat, they usually get close to me, I am a cat person for sure.

Herc must have taught you how to scratch them for maximum pleasure. I know that the base of the horns (if they have any) are "happy spots" for many sheep and goats.

How special for you. I totally understand. I want to pet every dog that I see, especially now that we don't have any. I once saw an Irish wolfhound in a pet store and was over the moon. I got to pet her and was so excited. They are really TALL dogs.

I haven't known an Irish Wolfhound. Oddly, pitbulls are especially drawn to me.

I can imagine how excited you were to talk to the horse. I always have cats and dogs since I was a child but seeing other people's pets still makes me feel like a child seeing a new toy (not that I think of them as a toy).
