Keeping useless things

I hate to throw anything away - because as soon as you dispose of something (unless it really is pretty much useless like a smashed glass or an empty biscuit packet) then a few days later you find you have a need for it, or you meet someone else who is looking for just that thing. So I tend to keep all sorts of odds and ends just in case they come in handy for me or someone else. My parents were just the same, and if I ever queried why they were keeping what appeared to be junk they always had some logical reason for it. Of course they both hoarded different things, and then blamed each other for the clutter! This is one thing that really made me laugh though - neatly kept in an old envelope and carefully labelled is what must be a useless object, surely! Of course I still have it, just in case… All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2020.

I have so many "useless" objects in my home, included the old keys of our Postal Box in Monte Carlo.

I think I will just add them to my bunch of old keys! I used to like to play with a bunch of keys when I was little, and so did my children, and the way the years fly past who knows, maybe I will have grandchildren in ten or fifteen years and I can give them those to amuse themselves and not risk losing my house keys!

@crazyhorseladycx I don't think we're moving to electronic locks on homes yet, are we?

In fact, I still keep cardboard boxes that have been decades old, and some paper receipts for electricity bills.

Indeed, it is surprising how many useless things have come in handy!

Haha - that is pretty funny - but we are much the same. And you're right. As soon as you dispose of something, you discover you need it.

I just love the way these keys are so carefully labelled!

@JudyEv I guess they must have mistakenly picked them up a few times before, and then had the annoyance of not being able to open the door. But then instead of just chucking them out they wrote a new label!

@Fleura Well, they didn't want them being used for anything!

It is amazing how many things we accumulate over the years. Like you, I always have this feeling as soon as I throw away an item I have not used for many years I will need it. Even when I know the chances of needing it are remote. That note says it all

It's almost worth keeping just because it makes me laugh every time I come across it!

Depends on what it is. Most things we dispose of, others we keep. But, only if we know right away what we'll use that object for.
