Apparently 20 states are increasing their minimum wage starting January 1 though not all to the same level. Some are at like $10.34 and others like California are going to $14. NJ is going to $12 which is a decent increase.
There is a big movement with progressive Democrats to push for a $15/hr minimum wage. I'm honestly not against that. It is expensive to live in this state on a basic minimum wage job let alone trying to raise children on it as well. NJ has hit $12. We will get there eventually.

I knew several states were headed up, but was not aware of the various levels. It will be interesting to watch how things work out.

The problem with this is always that nobody really thinks about where the money will come from to pay these increased wages. Especially for small business, the backbone of America, and providers of about 70% of all jobs in the country, these businesses will simply have to make a choice whether to raise prices, hire less people, fire current workers, or just close their doors...
Meaning nobody really gains. The impact on the back end is what matters, and while SOME people will see their paychecks rise, others will see their own paychecks drop to zero.
On top of that, this happens to be the worst possible time to do this since many of the businesses impacted by this change are also the small mom and pops and bars and restaurants already struggling through Covid shut downs of their businesses.
Couple that with Biden's proposed tax increase of anyone making $400,000 a year or more (which are MANY small businesses since many are LLCs who run their businesses through their personal taxes)…
The people who will suffer from wage increases the most are the one's who the wage increases are supposed to help.
Just an unfortunate reality, and something we call "unintended consequences" that are so often part of what seem like good ideas on paper, but that fail miserably in the real world.

That's not a bad amount to have it meet somewhere in the middle with $12.

Michigan will increase its minimum wage tomorrow, I'm sure. It's not how much people earn that makes a difference, it's how they budget.

That's great news as long as there isn't inflation due to rising costs of doing business.
