Don't the pears look tempting?

We’ve had a lovely start to the New Year with five nights spent with five friends in a lovely house at Madora Bay in Western Australia. Although we had internet, I didn’t get much chance to interact but I’m home for a few days now. We have been meeting for a number of years now and it is a very easy and relaxed time. The house is really functional with five bedrooms all having their own ensuites. It’s more like a luxury hotel for most of us. From the second floor balcony of the house, we could see the ocean which was very pleasant. The men played golf on New Year’s Day and the wives relaxed at home reading books or playing games. We each chose a course to prepare on New Year’s Eve. Vince did beef wellington which turned out very tasty. We had a seafood cocktail for starters and plum pudding and custard for dessert. The house was fitted out by an interior designer and one of the features is this huge china bowl full of fake pears. The apples and banana are real. The bowl and pears are quite impressive although it isn’t really ‘me’ but I don’t have to live there.

I remember that my grandmother had a beautiful old bowl filled with fake fruits (apples, pears, grapes) they looked so real that one of my younger cousins bite into an apple one day. Granny was not happy, not at all.

@JudyEv Those of the past were made with wax and painted, they were not too hard to chew. We talked about this with my favorite cousin when she called me three days ago. We cannot remember who was the cousin who tried to eat one, we are both sure it was not a girl but a boy, I am sure it was not my brother... but there are another 6 suspects now!

@JudyEv I am pretty sure to know who was... the one who is now a famous Chef, he was the most insubordinate among the cousins.

@LadyDuck Perhaps you should contact them all to see if anyone owns up to eating a wax apple.

@JudyEv I do not buy bananas as much as I would like to because they do not last so have to eat them up right away when I buy them and only buy two at a time.

Due to a curfew I did not celebrated New Year's Eve with friends for the first time since more than 30 years. I had foie gras and champagne, but it was not that fun alone, and I went to bed at 10 pm, and woke up at midnight when the phones started to ring to wish me a happy new year. The pears in this bowl look more real than the red apples. Impressive.

That's a shame you couldn't get together with your friends, especially when you'd be doing it for over 30 years. There is one red Christmas bauble in the fruit bowl too. It looks a bit like an apple.

What a great way to usher out the old year and welcome the new year. I thought that was an awful lot of pears, glad to know that they will not all ripen at once and go bad.

It takes up a large amount of room on the counter but they only stay there from time to time so I guess it doesn't matter much.

@judyev Sounds like a wonderful time you had. The verisimilitude of the pears is impressive. I want pear crumble now. With custard.

Peach crumble is better - or apple. Vince had 'injected' a good amount of brandy into a fruit cake. It was pretty nice with custard.

It's good that you have a well spent new year. I only see pears here during December and I think it's imported from elsewhere.

The pears aren't real although they have been on the shelves for a while. The season would be just about over by now.

I think it's the decorator's idea of 'style' or 'class' or somesuch. I wouldn't want it in my house really.

Thanks. We're busy making a little wooden box for her friend for her 70th birthday. It has to be finished by Sunday but needs at least 3 coats of varnish with 8 hours between each coat.

No, it belongs to our friends. They are well-to-do now but he started off as an apprentice plumber. They have both worked extremely hard and deserve their good fortune.

Ah yes and I will be happy if the real life pears are that small. I will only eat them if they are soft and someone share it with me. Otherwise, they are too big for me to consume alone.
