Ancestry DNA kit

Have any of you had your DNA tested to see where your ancestors were from? My husband gave me a kit from Ancestry.com and I've just mailed it off. His showed different parts of the world where his ancient relatives lived and he also learned of some relatives close by that he didn't know of. I think it's really cool to learn about one's heritage. At first I thought, I don't want my DNA "out there" until I realized that my DNA can be found in lots of places. What do you think about it?

I have not. I looked at Ancestry.com a few years ago but not that impressed. What a cute photo.

Our son received one for a Christmas gift several years ago. He wanted it so badly, and yet it took him half a year to get his sample sent in because he would always forget about it and have something to drink and then you cannot take your swab. My hubby and his siblings have a healthy dark complexion, and his mother was born out west, and our son was curious if there were any aboriginal lineage in his genes. there is not, but he enjoyed the kit just the same. I hope that you enjoy yours.

I had the same issue being sure I hadn't had anything 30 minutes before. Did he find any new relatives?

I had my DNA evaluated by 23andMe. not by MyHeritage, but the service is similar. It didn't tell me much about my recent ancestry that I didn't know already but it did reveal that my mother's ancestors - we are talking about several thousand years ago here - probably came from Northern Europe and the Russian Steppes whereas my father's line more likely came from the Middle East.

I had mine done several years ago and they are always updating it as they get more information about certain regions. I want to try the other major brand as well, I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head though.

@1creekgirl It's funny because as soon as I opened your discussion up again I remembered it. Yep, it's 23andMe. They have the further part that analyzes your hereditary stuff. I know there are other websites I can use my ancestry DNA kit and they'll analyze the hereditary portion but I think I prefer to just do it all over again with 23andMe.

@1creekgirl You lose all control over it and they can do whatever they want with it. Potential genetic discrimination by employers, insurance companies, hospitals, etc.

I have one I have yet to use. I look forward to doing it. My sister did her husband's and her daughter, Amyra. My brother-in-law has a brother he's never met (his parents, poor at the time, gave him up for adoption, something I could not have done), so in case that brother ever does his ancestry, he can see him listed.

I think is interesting. I would like to do it. I want to see if there are any surprises. I know someone who did it who found out they had Italian ancestry..They did not know of that. That wouldn't surprise me too much to find that, but alittle bit.

I have done my DNA at ancestry, Sorensen and family tree. I have then downloaded it to Gedmatch, my heritage and other places. I am really out there. I love DNA and it has helped me find lots of new relatives and confirm some others. It has answered some questions and created others lol I have joined a bunch of specific Irish DNA groups that connect Gedmatch and Facebook. I have been doing genealogy for over 30 years and these days I am a bit of a DNA expert having taken countless classes on triangulating etc. And your grandson sure is a cutie!!

No, I never had a DNA test. Both the ancestors of both the families of my father and my mother did not move a lot from the area where they were born, I know my father ancestors are from Celtic origins.

I don't know. Hmm. I guess I really don't care one way or the other. I mean, don't get me wrong. I am sure it would be interesting. But to what end I wonder? Is it really "useful" information? I guess I can be for it merely for the entertainment value I guess.

I think our grandson Nathan wants to find new relatives. He found a few with his DNA search and I think he's into that because of his mom dying when he was a baby. He loves meeting new family.

Those histories done by family members are priceless. My maternal grandmother did one and I learned we have an Irish king or? in our family.
