Coffee Maker Conundrums

After about 5 years of service - my coffee maker broke. Actually it was the power switch that broke. No way to fix it. Mine was an off brand $20 cheapy. It was red and could take a large mug. Only took coffee grounds, not the K cups. Well, 20$ for 5 years, not a bad investment. So I thought I would simply order the replacement. Not so fast. I wanted a coffee maker for 1 cup that could take either K Cups or grounds, under $40, and fit large mugs, and was ready to ship right away. Oh my goodness that was difficult. The one I wanted fit all of those specifications - but was on back order. My mom has the same one and it is a nice unit. So I researched in stock ones - and either they wouldn't fit big mugs, would only make 8 Oz. at a time, either only took grounds (which would have been alright) or only took KCups (not alright with me since my favorite coffee comes only in grounds) ... So, I decided it was worth it to wait for the one I really wanted. And it came a day early! Sometimes it is sure tough to get what you want. Photo : Pixabay user AnnaliseArt

The last time I even owned a coffee maker was before I married my first wife. She couldn't stand to smell coffee brewing. The smell would make her throw up. So she threw out my coffee maker. I learned to do without coffee. After I started getting divorced from her I tried drinking some coffee at a friend's house. I didn't like it. Once in a while I try drinking some when some friend or other offers a cup while I'm visiting with them. I just don't like it anymore. *shrug*

@FayeHazel I make my own flavored water. I buy the bottles of flavoring made for cake icing. I add half cup of sugar to a gallon of warm water and then dribble in some flavoring until it smells right. I then put it into the fridge until cold and enjoy it. (The water must be warm or the flavoring won't mix with it right.)

Oh wow. I think that's the first time I've heard of that. Sometimes I've heard the opposite - someone who doesn't like drinking coffee - but likes the smell of it. But not someone who gets so nauseated by coffee smell to the point of getting ill. Well that's a bummer for her and you too needing to go without. I wonder if that instant coffee would have worked. Ah well anyway - If I go long enough without sugar then I don't find that I crave it. Do you do something else? Coffee? Tea? Me? (just kidding) Soda?

@DaddyEvil Flavoring made for cake icing? What is the magic of which you speak? lol. Interesting idea. I'm sure the 1/2 C of sugar to the gallon of water isn't all that bad for a person either

Our daughter and husband love their Kurig, our granddaughter has some weird kind of coffee maker, but we still like our old coffee maker. Glad you found one like you wanted.

@FayeHazel we have a regular 10 cup auto coffee maker. I can make it as strong or weak as we like. Couldn't do that with a Kurig.

@1creekgirl True. Plus it seems like so many more grounds come as grounds rather than cups

Thanks! Ah the Kurigs look nice, but I've never been on board with just buying the KCups. Ive heard a lot about French Press too. But.... I like a single serve regular old drip coffee makers. What kind do you have?

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I probably should be. It's better for a person than coke, which is my drink of choice.

If you drink black coffee it's not that bad .... depends on how much stuff you like in there. Like me, I like a little coffee with my creamer . Doh. Oh, I totally don't blame you. There is something nice, crisp and refreshing about a Coke

I would have done the same thing - wait for the one I wanted. I don't know how I would make it without coffee until I got it though.

Glad you were able to find something that worked out for you and met all of your desires. I can't go a day without a coffee pot personally, so I would have had to have made a quick decision... Well, I do have a couple of old ones I could use in a pinch.
