Are Tattoos Addictive?

United States
January 15, 2021 9:34pm CST
A few years ago, I worked as a cook, at a fastfood restaurant. Well, I would see a lot of young people covered with tattoos, and one of my younger workers would come in with a new one kind of regular. I asked why she kept getting them, she said they're addictive. Now help me if I am wrong, I saw on tv one night this tattoo artist was giving her a tattoo, and she was hollering so much until he stopped. But she let him finish it. So, do you think they're addictive. I'll never know.

An expensive addiction, if they are. The only tattoos I have are surgical scars.

They can be. Some people sometimes get a bit of pleasure from pain, or knowing they are permentally marking up their body. They enjoy it hurts, they enjoy knowing they are giving pain for a little pleasure.

Same here. Only needle that goes close to my skin is the one I use to test my blood sugar.@popciclecold

Perhaps they wanted to feel the pain of needles on their skin again and again.

I think for some people they are. I can't see paying to inflict pain on yourself personally.

Some people may be addicted to the pain of being burned with ink.

That depends on the person. Some people just want one and never get more some people get them because they want them as reminders of things and others just love pain and ink so they get them all of the time. I have one tattoo since I was 22 and yes I’d love two more just two more. My only one I have right now is from when I had a miscarriage and I wanted it as a remind of the pain I felt and to carry in some physical for a reminder of that could be child. My husband got the same tattoo. He also has a few other ones. One of our oldest hand, our middle ones foot and he wants our youngest hand. He also has a music notes colored in with our birthstone colors and the first letter to our names. He also has a tattoo of a song on his back that is sang at our family reunion every year. He wants two more tattoos. One for his grandpa that passed this year and the miss hand of son and possibly none that would be a lock and I have the key tattoo. He doesn’t like needles or pain but he doesn’t like ink that is meaningful.

Some people are covered with them. I was in Walmart, and saw a girl look like the whites of her eyes, were blood red. I got so scared.

Hmmm... how do I answer this... tattoos aren't addictive... the pain/relief of getting a tattoo can be addictive. Some people, don't ask me why since I can't answer that, like pain. They will tell you that isn't true, but it is. "Being tattooed can lead to an adrenaline rush of sorts. It's the body tolerating annoyance and pain coupled with excitement and change." @popciclecold You're very welcome. Many times the people who get/have tattoos will tell others that getting tattoos can be addictive... I think those people don't realize it isn't getting the tattoo that is addictive. It is the pain relief hormones their body produces that are addictive.

I don't have any tattoo so I couldn't answer your question. I did want one, but I didn't do it because of religion. But now I don't think I could do it. I got traumatic toward needles.

Depending on the person, anything could become an addiction, even things like exercises, diets, cleaning, loved ones, etc.
