The Climb - an American film - and toxic friendships

Another of the international films we’ve seen was The Climb which is a US film. It was written by Kyle Marvin and Michael Angelo Covino, starred both (and they used their own names in the film) and was directed by Covino. There were many funny moments and a lot of bad language. The film left me pondering on toxic friendships, which was pretty much what the film was about. As an outsider, you could see the harm being done by the selfish, needy part of the duo. But, through thick and thin, the friendship ebbed and flowed and at the end, the two were still friends. To me, toxic friends can cause a myriad of difficulties. I guess part of the problem is recognising when you’re in such a situation. The photo is of a field of sunflowers in France.

You know when I read that title, I thought of the song "the Climb" by Miley Cyris.

@kaylachan I'm not familiar with any of her songs. I'm a bit of a dinosaur regarding current music.

Lovely photo. Even when you like or love someone, toxicity can beat you down.

That's true. I had one friend who always managed to make me feel very inferior. We don't see her much now.

The 'good' guy was a true friend but altogether too loyal really. Glad you like the photo. We went for days waiting to find a field where the flowers were pointing towards us. They follow the sun around and we always seemed to be on the wrong side.

I don’t care for toxic relationships, and I think God has blessed me with being able to see them easily and avoid them....even in my family.

The film left me quite uneasy. The so-called 'friend' was a real a**-hole and it's not a word I use often.

Sounds like a good movie. I’ll have to look it up. I can’t deal with toxic people. They are no longer in my life.

So it ended hapily enough for the two of them. The sunflowers in the field in France are nice

I suppose so but the friend had managed to ruin one relationship and possibly the second although that wasn't stated.

I have had friends that tried to bring me down to their level. The relationship ended and I felt uplifted as a result. I am one that tries to see the good side of someone and focus on that. But, when the toxic side of that person is always present, it makes it difficult to be around them. Better to move along. I still see these people out and about. I stop to say hello to them. But, that negative vibe that they trigger is ever present still. Glad with my decision to end the relationship.

Hopefully, you can be distant friends with such people but not so close that they are continually impacting on your thoughts and behaviour.

I think sometimes but rarely toxic friendships may be worth hanging on to because at the core you care deeply about the other person., however, if possible it is better to do it from afar.

@JudyEv That's right, and if it is a long lasting friendship..just saying buh, bye is really hard, and maybe worse than just hanging in there maybe with less contact.

There was a poignant moment in the film when someone was telling the 'good' guy that he should let the other go and he said 'But he's my friend'.

@snowy22315 Less contact is probably the way to go. We were really good friends with someone but she always managed to make me feel very inferior. As things turned out, we moved away and now only see her from time to time which suits me better.

Despite the bad language, this sounds like a good movie. Toxic friends can ruin your life.

@JudyEv This is usually the case when a film is admitted to a festival.

They can indeed. It was considered good enough to make the festival so that should count for something.

i've yet to figure why so many've such language? why such 'tis e'en 'ccepted by society 's the 'norm'. depends'n the relationship 'n when the 'buse starts. how well the other party's planned 'n manipulated. how good they'd be't convincin' the other party they're imaginin' schtuff 'r jest plain o'er exageratin' the harm done. gorgeous sunflowers!

@JudyEv when did such 'come 'cceptable 's normal speech? here, the women're jest 's foul-mouthed's the menfolk. they see nothin' wrong with such, claim "everybody talks this way". uhm, not me. sure don't wish to sit through a film listenin' to such either. we used to've loads 'f wild sunflowers 'round the playas. 'lways makes ya smile when ya see such a sight. happy lookin' flowers reachin' fer the sun.

@crazyhorseladycx The women here are quite bad too especially the younger ones. Some of the children have a fair vocabulary too when it comes to swear words.

Here, most don't bother to temper their language around women and children either although the language isn't as foul as in this film. We loved the fields of sunflowers.

Toxic friendships no matter how much you love the person are draining. I have learned to let go of those friendships, still talk with the people but not as close as once was. It has helped my mental health tremendously, though very hard on my heart at the time. Lovely photo

For the sake of your mental health, I think you have to distance yourself from people like this.

@JudyEv Toxic relationships of any kind are very bad for a person. They do not care about the person and do not care about themselves either. They are very miserable.

That's true. The man in the film wasn't happy with his situation but he didn't seem able to change.

@JudyEv That is how toxic people and bullies are. They are miserable and want everyone around them to be miserable too.

because of my friends I rose above my own ignorance. Now that is a film I've seen. It shows a very hard to accept the reality of friends.

For a moment, I thought of a song with the same title. Despite the plot, I'm glad the movie have a good ending. Toxic friend is indeed a thorn on our side. It is something that we should remove, never to keep.

Thank you for the critique. Why is it always necessary to have so much bad language in a movie? I don't care for it.

As characters, this language would have been authentic but sometimes they do seem to go overboard a bit.
