Interestin' guest 't the feeder

United States

Durin' our last wintry storm, this lil fella showed'p 't the feeder. I'd a time tryin' to figure what such 'twas. Looked like a finch, but the colorin' threw me off. This lil cutie caught my eye 't one 'f the feeders when 't flew'n. Yellow wings 'nderneath, so's my first thought 'twas some species 'f Warbler. Come to find out, 'tis a House Finch 'f a diff'rent color. 'pparently 'ts diet durin' moltin' can've a big impact 'pon the new feathers colors. 'r, could be a subspecies. This bird figurin' schtuff 'tis beyond my brain capabilities these days :) If'n ya wish to read a bit more, here's a link:

The one to the left looks like a sparrow, the one to the right surely is a finch, it's a cute bird.

no ma'am, they'd both be house finches. the one to the left 'tis not come 'nto full color, so must be a late hatchlin'. if'n ya squint, ya can see the red :) 'twas a delight to see the lil yellowish-pink 'un. 'tis the only day i've seen him.

@crazyhorseladycx May be it's also because only the back of the bird is visible. I have seen the green finches at the feeders yesterday, they are cute birds.

I seem to have kept these birds when I was in junior high school because their cages were open they were flying freely.

If what they eat changes the colors we'd have to be a whiz to figure it all out since we've no clue what all they're eating.

i've read that puttin' out black oil sunflower seeds 'tis beneficial fer such. sadly with our drought, wild sunflowers were hard to come by. i feed such here year round, so suspect this'n 'tis not one who's normally here. 've not seen 't since that day, perhaps moved'n? 'tis said that a female'll not take one like this's her mate. they prefer the darkest 'f reds, shows they're good providers. 'r so the bird specialists claim. if'n such's so, he's gonna be lonely 'til his next molt. hopefully he'll get proper foods fer 't.

from what i've read, anywhere from may to november. yepperz, their colorin' comes from pigments'n their foods. durin' the spring/summer i've berries, fruits'n an 'ssortment 'f seeds fer 'em to choose from. i'm thinkin' this'un 'twas not from here? the first i'd seen't anyhow, aint seen 't since either. 'tis interestin' that the females choose the reddest male. the thought bein' they'd be better providers fer the nestlings.

Really neat photo! Very colorful bird. I see Goldfinches during summer here. Red bellied adult males are abundant all year round.
