The Swallows of Kabul - a sobering film

We went to another of the Summer International Film Festival films recently. The Swallows of Kabul was an animated film showing the lives of two couples living under Taliban rule in Kabul, Afghanistan.
The animation is beautifully done in watercolours but it is a very sobering film and gives ‘sensitive insights into tragedies many of us could never comprehend’. The violence and indifference to human suffering are in stark contrast to the romantic elements and only serves to highlight the horror of life under such a regime with its sharia law. Their treatment of women is incredibly barbaric.
That’s the sixth festival film we’ve seen. We have six more to see and hopefully we’ll manage to get to them all. We go to Perth this afternoon to attend a wedding tomorrow so I’ll see you all on Sunday. Take care.
I don’t have a photo of swallows but here is a robin about to take a leap of faith into the birdbath.

Cute. The photo I mean. Good to see films not hiding the realities of life. Makes me grateful to be an Americian.

The movie sounds stark. Have fun at the wedding. I wish I was going to one.

It was very well done. Nothing cartoonish about it at all.

That doesn't look like our robins either. I hate to admit it, but I like "happily ever after" kinds of movies. I would make a horrible social worker for the same reasons. I would take my work home with me every single night.

I do too but I sort of feel I'm paying respect to these people by going outside my comfort zone in watching it.

@crazyhorseladycx For sure. It's surprising how hard it can be to take in 12 films even when you have a month in which to do it. Most are offered three times over the period but only Thursday to Sunday. It seems to have been a busy month for us.

That's a fantastic photo!
I'm sure the film was important but I don't think I would want to see it. I know life was terrible and there's nothing I can do about it. I just hope Afghanistan can emerge from the horror. It used to be a wonderful country; it was one of the places I would like to have visited : (

@JudyEv sad reality is that Kabul was a rough place when I was there in the 70s. it hasn't gotten better
