The Swallows of Kabul - a sobering film

We went to another of the Summer International Film Festival films recently. The Swallows of Kabul was an animated film showing the lives of two couples living under Taliban rule in Kabul, Afghanistan. The animation is beautifully done in watercolours but it is a very sobering film and gives ‘sensitive insights into tragedies many of us could never comprehend’. The violence and indifference to human suffering are in stark contrast to the romantic elements and only serves to highlight the horror of life under such a regime with its sharia law. Their treatment of women is incredibly barbaric. That’s the sixth festival film we’ve seen. We have six more to see and hopefully we’ll manage to get to them all. We go to Perth this afternoon to attend a wedding tomorrow so I’ll see you all on Sunday. Take care. I don’t have a photo of swallows but here is a robin about to take a leap of faith into the birdbath.

That is a stunning photo. I can't imagine life like that. We're both so lucky not to live in a horrible place like that.

This little robin photo is beautiful. What is going on in Afghanistan is horrible, it has been like that from too many years.

@JudyEv No, unfortunately not, until selling war stuff makes some important people richer.

It is awful. I know it was only animation but the buildings were mostly destroyed with people living in poverty. Schools and universities just in ruins, not to mention how the citizens were treated.

@LadyDuck I'm sure you are right but I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

Cute. The photo I mean. Good to see films not hiding the realities of life. Makes me grateful to be an Americian.

I think it's good to be occasionally reminded of how lucky we are to live where we do.

@judyev I love that kind of film festival. I do miss our little art house cinema where such things happened.

We rarely go to the movies unless it's too these festivals. We just don't get around to it. Maybe if we saw what was showing we might go but we don't get any papers etc to tell us.

Beautiful photo. Our robins are different. And I see many in the yard lately. Sounds like an intense film.

Our robins are different from both the US and English versions. Yes, the film was pretty intense. Not for the faint-hearted although being animated probably made it a bit less awful.

It was a bit confronting but I feel in a way I'm paying respect to these victims by going outside my comfort zone to watch.

That doesn't look like our robins either. I hate to admit it, but I like "happily ever after" kinds of movies. I would make a horrible social worker for the same reasons. I would take my work home with me every single night.

@crazyhorseladycx For sure. It's surprising how hard it can be to take in 12 films even when you have a month in which to do it. Most are offered three times over the period but only Thursday to Sunday. It seems to have been a busy month for us.

That's a fantastic photo! I'm sure the film was important but I don't think I would want to see it. I know life was terrible and there's nothing I can do about it. I just hope Afghanistan can emerge from the horror. It used to be a wonderful country; it was one of the places I would like to have visited : (

Glad you like the photo. Yes, the people there are truly suffering. Especially the women but also the men who don't necessarily agree with what's going on.
