Lady Gaga Sings The National Anthem At Joe Biden's Presidential Inauguration

Lady Gaga, Biden Inauguration

I've just watched Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, sing the American national anthem. It was a sight to see her enter the stage in front of the Capitol in an enormous red and black robe (a Schiaparelli Confection)! I'm sure that if you unfolded and measured the cloth used for the skirt, you'd find that you could make a tent for at least three people from it. When the singing had ended, I noticed by chance that there were loads of comments on it on the net only moments later. I'm not into music. I can't make an intelligent remark on whether a performance is top notch or if it has flaws. The American anthem means nothing to me due to the fact that I'm not an American citizen. When I hear it - or any other national anthem - , I'm not touched emotionally. I think she sang well, certainly with fervour and true feelings. I couldn't believe what I read and heard in the comments. Instead of being content with the whole event, people were nitpicking Lady Gaga's performance from beginning to end. I remember one remark. A commentator had noticed that when she pronounced a diphthong* she had put a bit more stress on the first vowel sound instead of on the second (or the other way round). So? What if she did? Goodness! In my opinion such criticism has more to do with the critic than with the criticised person. He or she wants to show off their knowledge of whatever they are criticising. In the local dialect of the German region where I live, such people are called "shi*ters of dots on the i". I'll always remember an excursion I took part in when I was holidaying with my husband in the south of Turkey. The group went by coach to a lake and made a round trip there on a small ship during which the tourists could jump into the water and swim for a while. *All the time* Lady Gaga was blaring through the tinny loudspeakers! But I still like her singing. :-) --------- * (WIKIPEDIA) diphthong, "also known as a gliding vowel, is a combination of two adjacent vowel sounds within the same syllable. Technically, a diphthong is a vowel with two different targets: that is, the tongue (and/or other parts of the speech apparatus) moves during the pronunciation of the vowel. In most varieties of English, the phrase 'no highway cowboys' ... has five distinct diphthongs, one in every syllable." --------- Have a listen!

I watched it live and loved everything about her and how she performed MY National Anthem. Her dress was her style and her voice and rendition remarkable.

I loved the fitted jacket. The other performer I loved was the poet, what did you think of her?

@Fleura I thought the poet laureate was fabulous and so composed for such a young girl. Her poem said it all. I secretly love Lady Gaga’s outfits, but saw her dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and baseball cap like a normal person at a baseball game. lol

Unfortunately, there are many belonging to this tribe. They often work in offices.

So what if she sung the anthem? Why on earth people Nit-picking it? The fact she'd been willing to, should be enough.

@MALUSE I understand that I was just saying that it was the first time I even hear her sing so I was no judge about what she should or should not sound like

Lady Gaga is the singer, but what she sings is not 'her' music. It's the American national anthem.

@maluse I saw the spectacle and it's a mystery how all that fabric didn't blow away in the wind. I don't think she lent any dignity to the occasion - more of an entertainment extravaganza than as inauguration but any celebrity would have done the same. Not to my taste, but that's not what anyone was aiming for. I can't get worked up about anyone's national anthem - not even my own, if I have one.

I couldn't even sing the national anthem of my country. I don't know the full text by heart, only bits. I learnt the national anthem of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) at school and knew it until we defected to West Germany. There I had to learn another one and then mixed text and tune of the two Germanys so-to-speak. Of course, the one from the GDR doesn't exist any more because the GDR doesn't exist any more. If the opportunity arises, I don't join in the singing at all because I'm afraid I may sing the wrong one.

@xFiacre No, it's a mystery why Lady Gaga wasn't blown away. A gust of wind under her skirt could have lifted her in the air!

Flower of Scotland would make your heart beat faster my friend. I best. Scotland the Brave is much better. Did you hear either song when you toured Scotland?

As I don't know the songs, I can't say if I heard them or not. I heard a large group of bag-pipers play when the Queen arrived at the train station in Balmoral. But I don't know which tunes they were playing.

@MALUSE I suppose that's the nature of being an entertainer - everything has to be larger than life.

"Overdressed", well, it was a special occasion, wasn't it? I doubt that she'll wear this dress for other occasions now that the whole world has seen it.

I did not read comments about her singing but I did read people saying that her costume resembles that of the "Hunger Games". I am assuming because of the brooch of a dove she was wearing. In the "Hunger Games" there is the mockingjay symbol that people wore. Though the mockingjay is considered a sign of rebellion by the Capitol, so not sure how that relates to Lady Gaga.

I don't know the 'Hunger Games', so the bird didn't remind me of anything. I only saw a bird without any associations.

Thank you so much for the link. The National Anthem happened to be the one part of the ceremony that I missed. I didn't care for Lady Gaga's rendition; but her voice was almost faultless. Why haters chose to pick apart her performance, I just don't know! Have a great weekend.

When some artists sing the national anthem they overdo it or change it up a lot and it loses its effect. Gaga thankfully didn't do that.

Social media is a tool where anyone can be a critic but I sure don't agree with all of the opinions. Lady Gaga can sing . . . I appreciate that she is classically trained and she puts on her own artistic twists to her performances. I thought she did a fantastic job at the inauguration.

I am not a fan of Lady Gaga, but I think her performance was good. All her dresses are extravagant, this one was not an exception and not something I like, too much of everything, included the size of the bird on her stomach.
