Rainbows

My granddaughter was looking for suggestions for a theme for her daughter's 3rd birthday. I suggested a rainbow theme. My granddaughter looked at me and said, "Granny, rainbows are the logo for gay pride. I don't think it would be appropriate." I was a bit shocked, not by the logo but the concept itself. I was not sure what to reply. What do you all think?

Wow, just wow. I wish I could say 'I can't believe'.... but I can. Children usually don't have any filters. I honestly don't know hat to say. However, I do feel this would be a good time to talk to her about inclusivity. It's better that she understand this now.

@MsTickle Yes, but who is the greater? Your granddaughter, who I am sure is great, or your great granddaughter?

Unfortunately a lot of ordinary things we grew up loving have become political banners of one kind or another. Remember when we could say gay and it would mean happy?

Yes, me too @MsTickle this younger generation would wonder at a sentence I once read in a book when I was still in school "as the girls skipped gayly about the town" So many words have different meanings these days and now they added images that were once just about nature and nothing more.

I know that this is what rainbow has become, the logo of gay pride.

Yes, it's sad and also confusing. It is for me anyway.

@MsTickle I fully agree that it is sad, rainbows are so beautiful, it is a shame they have become the gay pride symbol.

She knows more than I do. In that case how about a theme about the Disney princesses?

Thanks but an alternative was not really the point.

Your granddaughter is right. Symbol for gay pride is rainbow. I just found that out too. What does your granddaughter like that would make her delighted for her birthday theme?

For her daughter's birthday theme? I really don't know. I imagine she will come up with something. Her daughter loves sharks. Go figure.

@oahuwriter I would just like her to know that she can be anything she wants.

Actually I think the rainbow is the symbol for the LGBTQIA+ community, but please don't ask me what each initial stands for. I just wish people would invent new words and symbols instead of causing confusion and possible upset, especially amongst the older generation who may only be aware of the old meanings. "No milk today My love has gone away, The company was gay, We turned night into day"

As you say, my great granddaughter is (nearly) 3 but it is her mother, my granddaughter who knows about the world. Things are always changing. Sometimes for good, sometimes not so good. Sometimes things are changed unnecessarily and we don't get a say in it.

I have heard that for the first time. It's so sad that people are so judgemental about everything and associates nature with what they think. I feel nature should be left alone.
