Our dryer is no longer working

Seems our dryer is no longer working. Hubby tried turning it on yesterday but it made a weird noise when he pressed the button and wouldn't start. We tried turning on the washer but it wouldn't turn on either. It was weird because he had washed his clothes and it worked fine. We thought that the extension cord stopped working so we replaced it with a new one. The washer turned on but the dryer wouldn't. That means it is time for a new dryer. If I remember correctly, this dryer has been in this house since either late 90s or early 2000s. I am not sure what the life of a washer or dryer is supposed to be but I think it served a long time. I told my mom about it and she is gonna get us a new dryer. I just have to pick it out. She had replaced our old washer a few years ago, but since our dryer still worked she didn't wanna replace it at the time. I wish she had, so we wouldn't have to deal with it now.

That sounds a pretty good life for a dryer. I bet the new one won't last as long. They're programmed to fail after a few years. At least that's my opinion. Built-in obsolescence.

I agree with you on this. They don't want those appliance to last more than a few years so that you'll have to buy a new one.

@moffittjc That certainly seems to be the way nowadays.

Maybe it depends on the brand. My parents have theirs for more than a few years and it works well.

OH NO!! Our washing machine bit the dust a couple of weeks ago, so I empathize. We just got a new one last week and the matching dryer will arrive in February. Our current dryer still works but is a completely different capacity than the washing machine, plus it's 14 years old. We'll give away the old smaller dryer on Craigslist and some other family can appreciate it for a few more years.

Good thing we have those drying racks. When the dryer gave out hubby had done a load of laundry. Without the racks we'd have nowhere to put the wet clothes to dry. Good idea to get the dryer as well even though yours still works. Better to replace it all in one shot than have to worry about it later.

@lovebuglena Our new washer is one of those new style top loaders... it holds a LOT! Sometimes it's hard for me to reach the laundry at the very bottom.

That is very important to have. The laundromat costs a fortune.

Yes, plus you have to drag all the dirty laundry there. Very convenient to have it at home. And no need to worry about those quarters or having to sit at the laundromat waiting for the clothes to wash and dry.

I can relate to this. Our dryer went out in the beginning of the last year. so we had someone to replace a part and it worked fine for about eleven months. We decided it was time to purchase a new one.

Since ours is very old doesn't make sense to hire someone to look at it and try to fix it.

That's a long time to have a washer or dryer. We had ours for eight years, and decided to replace them when we bought our house.

Good idea. If you move into a new place might as well get new appliances.

My husband thought the same thing. We also decided to buy a dishwasher, too. The house didn't come with one, so we have a portable one.@lovebuglena

20+ years is excellent for a dryer just don't expect your new one to last as long. Your mother was smart waiting.

If she had gotten them together it would have been the same model though. Not sure we'll be able to get the same model now.

@lovebuglena Had she replaced it then though she would likely still be replacing it yet again now so a little mismatch is nothing.

@Namelesss She replaced the washer only a few years ago. The new dryer would still be working if she had replaced it at the same time as the washer.

At least she's still willing to help you with getting a new one. Our dryer came with the house and may be even older than that. I don't think it's energy efficient but it does still work and we'll wait until it breaks or after we get other much needed things taken care of first.

As long as it still works... Ours gave out and so far we've not looked. Maybe after the snow storm I will make hubby go with me to Home Depot. I don't want to order it online. I can't do laundry if I can't dry stuff. I can't put everything on the drying rack, especially bed stuff and towels. I need a dryer for that.

That it is good life cycle for a dryer. How nice your Mom will help you with replacing it. I hope you get at least 20 years from the new one

Well, we are renting her house. If it was our own house I'd not ask her to replace it.

That's a pretty good life for a dryer. We've had ours for about 16 years. Knock on wood.

Maybe it IS shot. Did you check the circuit breaker?

Hubby went to the garage where the fuses are. Not sure if he found an issue or if he even found the fuse. When I looked at the cord I noticed that it was made up of two cords and one was plugged into each other. The black one was plugged into the gray one. I unplugged them from each other and noticed that in the black one, one of the metal pins was black. It should not be black. Maybe that cord burned or something.

@porwest LOL maybe it is a circuit breaker. All I know is there this box on the wall in the garage and it has different switches.

@lovebuglena Oh. I am amazed you are still on fuses. My God, they did away with those years ago. Are you living in the stone ages?

I want the total to be much less. Maybe I should wait for Presidents' Day. They should have sales then. But that would mean waiting till the 13th-15th... And I need to do laundry.

@JimBo452020 There is some stuff I can hang dry on a rack but I can't do that with bed stuff and towels. And some things I need to dry right away so hanging them to dry ain't good. Maybe I will ask her.
