Dealing with those with autism - The Extraordinary - a great French film

We saw two very moving films yesterday at the International Summer Film Festival in Bunbury, Western Australia. The first was ‘The Extraordinary’, a French film about two men making a difference to the lives of those with severe autism and their families. One man was responsible for the care of around40 affected people and had a waiting list of another 50+ but the authorities were trying to shut down the operation because very few had the ‘right’ qualifications. The other man trained young people to work with the autistic and together they battled their way through from day to day. There was a lot of humour and positivity throughout the film and I’d thoroughly recommend it if you ever get the chance to see it. The photo is of another of the murals from around the theatre

They managed to keep it from being maudlin, thank goodness.

That must be quite hard at times to give them the care they need.

@JudyEv Yes I had a little bit of that myself to deal with doing hair and all. The aides would bring the autistic kids in for their hair cuts.

@RebeccasFarm I guess some of those were pretty challenging. A lot don't like being touched, do they?

The movie was moving without being too depressing. It highlighted the difficulty of dealing with these people.

@judyev My part of our town has a particularly high incidence of Autism that no-one can explain. I've had to learn quite a few new tricks. Sounds like a great film.

I wonder if there is a reason for the high incidence and, if so, if they'll ever find out what it is.

You are right. Some unfortunate people get shunted from pillar to post as no-one wants to, or has the skills, to look after them. The murals in this area are really lovely.

oh my, 'ppropiately named, that film, eh? takes special folks to work with autistic souls, more'n a piece 'f paper could give. who knows? someday i might be privy to viewin' such myself. i jest love the murals y'ave shared, hon. i wish we'd more 'round these parts, depictin' the cultures'n history 'f these lands. 'las, such's not so. 'd be a grand delight to see.

I can only imagine what it must be like to have autism and get along in this world. Glad that there those willing to work with them to help them learn how to cope in this world. Lovely mural. Whoever painted it surely is talented.

They must find it so difficult. The film gave a good insight into some of the behaviours that carers have to contend with.
