Visiting Family

Today was pretty boring, so I apologize for not having any exciting beach scenery or thrilling escapades to enthrall you with. No, I dropped in on a couple of old friends today. I called them when I was about 50 miles from their house and asked if I could come over. “Sure,” they said. “Great. I’ll be there in a couple of hours.” “Where are you?” I’m on the interstate, about 30 miles from Alexandria,” I replied. They thought I was joking at first, until I read off some of the highway markers to prove I really was in the neighborhood. They aren’t friends, they’re family. I’ve known them for nearly 30 years (and I’ve watched our collective hair gray up on us), through a lot of happiness and sadness. Part of the sadness including visiting the grave of my friend’s parents and brother. My friend and his brother were a Grammy-nominated singing duet, and the brother had a heart attack in 2001. It left us all devastated, as he was only 56. We’re all older, all wearing (or needing) hearing aids, restricted diets, and pill boxes to show us what we’re supposed to take and when (and remind us IF we did). But friendship is friendship. And dang, it was good to see them again. I’ll get back to the “regular” scenery tomorrow.
