What not to tell the teacher about home schooling.

Over dinner this evening we were talking about moose - which are the same animals known as elk in Lapland I believe, while elk in North America are a different species. And then there are reindeer, which are the same animals known as caribou in North America. I explained that Linnaeus invented the Latin system of names for all living things in the 18th century to avoid confusion concerning different names for the same plants and animals. I was trying to explain the system by which all living things are categorised - divided into Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. I have trouble remembering all this and the order in which they come (I’m not a biologist) but some years ago a friend (who is a biologist) taught me a little mnemonic to help, which is ‘Please Come Over For Gay Sex’. It certainly helps to jog the memory and get the P-C-O-F-G-S in the right order. It might be better if the girls don’t pass that on to their teachers when schools reopen though. They would be wondering exactly what sort of an education we have been giving our children! Since I don’t have a photo of a moose or a reindeer handy, here’s a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). I hope the girls don’t say a word out loud, but that is a great way to remember the orders. I would change it around to. Please Come Over For Good Singing. lol Our deer are so different looking. I better check the PCOFGS.

I'm sure there must be times when children say things that must make the teachers wonder about what goes on at home!

He sort of looks like he is saying can I eat these or is anyone watching me? Great photo whatever I mainly use my own photos too if not a youtube video. I can remember seeing in Great Britain names of things written in Latin.

@Fleura Have learned a lot from my youngest about shortened names He asked me once to check an e-mail message to a would be employer. I had to laugh I said its all very well to use this stuff for yourself and mates but not for someone outside of here. Its like a kind of short hand they use but verbally and texting wise.

Latin names are used worldwide, that's the point. The Latin name of a plant or animal is always the same, no matter what the common name is or what language it is.

Yeah, that might turn a few heads for sure. That's what happens when parents are forced to be.... parents. wow.

At least if you ever need to remember Phylum, Class etc you might have a better chance now!

@Fleura That's true, but I've all but forgotten most of that, since I'm no longer in school.

@kaylachan You never know when you might find yourself coerced into joining a quiz team or something - strange things do happen!

@fleura I do like that deer's nifty little high heels. I was home schooled for 4 years for non-covid reasons and was never treated to such a mnemonic. The best I had was M D H F - My Dog Has Fleas. I remember the mnemonic but not what it stands for.

@JudyEv My musical mnemonic was every good boy deserves favour rather than fruit or football

@Fleura I know My Dog Has Fleas as regards tuning a ukelele but it's the tune that's helpful as there is no musical notes 'M' and 'H'. As regards learning the music staves, I taught Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit (treble lines) and FACE (treble spaces) then Good Boys Deserve Fruit Always (bass lines) and All Cows Eat Grass (bass spaces). Gosh, that's a memory from the past!

That is a really lovely photo. Doesn't the deer have dainty little feet? And I agree - best not to teach the kids that particular mnemonic.

Thanks! At @DianneN' s suggestion we are going to opt for 'Please Come Over For Good Sushi'!

Yes, I think even boys should not repeat that to a teacher but it would be something to make a kid laugh thereby remember.

I hope they will never tell this to their teacher. We had something similar to remember all the names of the alps "Ma Con Gran Pena Le Reca Giù" (not a great phrase, but with great pain she brings them down) "Marittime Cozie Graie Pennine Lepontine Retiche Carniche Giulie".

That's an interesting mnemonic. I wouldn't tell the teacher that one either. It does remind me of how I learned to play the piano using words for the letters.

There are a few of those aren't they? My favourite is 'Never eat cress, eat salmon sandwiches and remain young' for how to spell necessary.
