A total fire ban in Western Australia today

We have three trees we need to cut down as they are too close to the power lines. We thought we might do it today but there is a total fire ban which means no movement of vehicles in paddocks and no use of chain-saws, or other machinery that might cause a spark. The total fire ban is not because of the weather but because all available fire-fighters are fighting a blaze just north of Perth, capital of Western Australia. Vince watches the activity in the air over the fire and yesterday there were 6 light aircraft, 3 water-bearing helicopters, 3 large air tankers and 2 control planes. He said it was like a beehive with so many planes in the air. Some stuff you may or may not know: Fire retardant is often dropped rather than water. It is coloured pink, I guess so they can see where they’ve been. The retardant is effective until heavy rains wash it off the vegetation. Fire-fighters are warned when the bombers are about to drop their load as they could be injured by the weight of the water. A direct hit on houses, too, needs to be avoided for the same reason. Planes cannot be used for fire-fighting once darkness falls so the task on the ground crews increases even more. My sister’s/nephew’s place is still unscathed at the moment. Photo of one of the (very) pregnant Nigerian dwarf does that were evacuated from their farmlet.

A total fire ban is good but I hope they will allow some activities that can promote reduction of fire risks too. That is so much activities in the air. I hope the fir will be controlled and out soon

That I knew from general reading. So glad your sister’s place is okay. Prayers that it stays that way.

This is tragic, Judy! Fires can destroy 1,000s of acres of land and everything in its path:( I'm happy these goats were spared, from this destructive blaze!

@kobesbuddy I heard one person had just moved and hadn't changed their insurance details. It would be heart-breaking.

Do you know about the automatic water sprinkler system installed in buildings that have sensors to detect fire and would automatically trigger the fire pump in the building which will automatically sprinkle water in the immediate vicinity of the fire or the whole floor of the building? I wish they would have installed something like it inside forests with big water pipes crisscrossing the trees and automatically senses the start of a fire and sprinkles water. It would be quite expensive though. Seems like my ideas are wild but don't you agree they make some sense?

Your ideas make a lot of sense and maybe one day some might be put into use. Our friends have sprinklers on their roof but they won't work once the power goes out which it often does when there is a big fire.

If they have invented missiles that would destroy a wide swathe in one go, they should have invented something similar to use in big forest fires and unlike the current retardants they use which only puts out fire on a smaller area.

We get fire bands in the U.S. on occasion due to hot, dry conditions. One year the fires were so bad, you could barely see the road in front of you and every one were wearing fire masks....not sure the right team... but you get what I mean. I'm just glad I don't remember it.

Yes. Nowadays it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when'. We've had some horrific tragedies in the last few years with whole communities wiped out.

@JudyEv The winds control where fires go, so hopefully it doesn't keep running wild like it has been. No loss of life is always a good thing, too.

All interesting information. Once we saw a demonstration of a water bomber skimming across the water to fill up with water. They have to be ready to fly with the extra weight and then with the sudden loss of weight. I hope the fires are contained soon.

Since I posted, a fire-fighter on social media said the planes sound a siren as a warning when they're about to drop their load. Vince watched a chopper once filling up at a farm dam.
