On Friday the occupational therapist at school wanted to teach me how to do some of the tasks she does with my little guy.
I was flattered because her department rarely shares their techniques. I am excited, as it will help him meet functional goals.
She was able to provide me with most of the tools I need, except for two things. I had materials to make the one, and I am puzzling away at coming up with the other item that I need. I will get there though.

Nice to hear of people working together.
What is the "other item" you need? Maybe someone here will have a helpful idea.

It is hard to describe and could be one of many things. I do not have what she has which is a round acrylic mirror with plastic trim and beads that rattle if he taps it. Idea is to get him to tap with both hands, then clap both hands, patterning. A toy tambourine would work and we may have one somewhere at school, or could get from music teacher.

@GardenGerty Is it similar to this? It's a Sassy brand baby rattle and sells for about $9 or less. It has a mirror on one side and a smiley face on the other.

It sounds to me that this department should be more forthcoming with their techniques. Especially if it helps the children you assist each week.

They would work with the lead teacher. We no longer have one. I am basically co ordinating the care and so they are updating me. His plan book has not been updated in the last year and a half.

@GardenGerty Oh, I guess that makes sense. I still believe everyone involved in the child's care at the school should be on the same page. A plan book that's not been updated in the last year and a half? That seems careless. The plan book outlines his needs and improvements, doesn't it?

That's nice of her to share the techniques. Actually we have to work as a team to benefit the child. Here we do sharing of such things to help the child.

Because of failings of the lead teacher, who is no longer with us, this child has not gotten the team work he needed last year and this year. I have insisted that I will work with him for the rest of the year, for almost all of the day. I have always gotten to work with the Physical Therapist for the gross motor things. Speech has always partnered with us. I think I am falling into a position of coordinating services.

Sometimes people look at what is being done and they over do it, lessening the effectiveness of the work. They used to collaborate with the teacher two years ago, and it was passed down to us. The last teacher was not good at that. Since I am pretty much responsible for him all day now, and we just have a long term sub, I think they felt they will get more results going to me.

It will make it easier for me to help him progress. Usually she deals with the lead teacher, but we have had a very messed up situation for the last two years and he has not gotten the classroom help.
