Rolling outages

Energy companies through out the area are ready to begin rolling outages to try to conserve energy and so there is enough energy to prevent unplanned outages.
They have asked us to turn our thermostats down a bit and to not use large appliances except between ten p.m. and 5 a.m.
This also means I am likely to vanish from here for thirty to sixty minutes. I hope you all miss me. I will tell you all about it if it happens.

I will never understand how power companies think, sometimes. How exactly, is creating an outage preventing a future one? And, how do you NOT use your fridge or freezer? I can understand things like stove, oven, dish washer etc.... but seriously?

I think they would rather flip the switch and cause a planned outage than have something malfunction, and not know where the problem is . They specifically said not to use washers, dryers, dishwashers and space heaters. My stove is gas. No mention of refrigerators and freezers or electric hot water tanks.

And the punchline of all of this is they'll be asking for a 35% rate increase because people were conserving energy....

They have already let it be known that our bills will be awful, whether we used extra power or not.

We seem to have managed to avoid it for now.

Conserving energy is a very good practice, that most people don't do.

For me it is easier in the summer, but I do what I can all the time.

@GardenGerty I consciously try to conserve, from growing up poor.

I would rather be warned. It seems that they have avoided it so far by voluntary reductions. I have not turned up the heat this morning yet, or done wash.

@GardenGerty Bad time to lose power for a while, that's for sure.

So far we have not had it go off here. Not sure about other nearby places. Or maybe I should say if it did, I was already asleep.

Nope, usually we just all use and use until something "pops" or a fuse blows or something. I think this is similar to the brown outs around NYC and other areas in the summer.
