With only ten slots some bands had to be omitted. If there were a slot #11 this band would have been in it! No way can I have a series on the classic bands with more than one lead vocalist and leave these guys out. Bonus #3: Doobie Brothers There was always the Tom Johnston era vs. the Michael McDoobie era argument, but even then there was always Patrick Simmons in the background, ready to unleash some great vocals at any time. In fact, the first #1 hit the Doobie Brothers had was a song that Simmons sang lead on, “Black Water.” McDonald didn’t set out to “replace” Johnston, given that both were on Takin’ It to the Streets.. However, Johnston’s health kept him from touring. Eventually he stepped aside and the latter-era Doobies became the bigger commercial success. And let’s not forget Tiran Porter, who also sang lead on songs, primarily the ones he wrote. What a terrific band, who finally got their long overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Doobie Brothers Lead singers: Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, Michael McDonald, Tiran Porter Patrick Simmons wanting to taking you by the hand, hand, take you by the hand, pretty mama:

One of the best concerts I saw pre-Mcdonald era. Although I did see McDonald solo post Doobies with Hall & Oates. One of my favorite Simmons songs is a pretty ballad called "South City Midnight Lady."

An excellent song. Simmons also sang lead on “I Cheat the Hangman,” which is another classic from them.
