More about the mural in Mt Barker

The mural in the photo is surely worth a second airing. We saw it when we were in Mt Barker, near the south coast of Western Australia. I found out more about it so thought I’d share the information. The mural was privately commissioned by a local couple who own a store there. Their names are Sue and George Corke and their shop/gallery is called Corkescrew Gallery. Isn’t that a clever name for their gallery? They see the mural as a gift to the community where they have lived for forty years. The artist, Jerome Davenport, grew up in Wickepin, which was a neighbouring town to where Vin and I spent our childhood. Jerome now roams the world as a street artist and has painted walls in many countries including the UK and Canada. He is also the founder of Blank Walls. This organisation is based in Perth and London and strives to connect upcoming and seasoned artists with potential places on which to display their talents. His next project will be set in Gnowangerup, another small town in Western Australia. It is known as one of the few places where mallee fowls can be found. I hope there is some media coverage when it’s finished so we can visit and see his next piece.

This mural is so happy and the artist talented. I imagine that it is not easy to paint something so big.

We saw a couple of smaller ones but then came round a corner and this just about smacked us between the eyes.

What a talented individual Mr. Davenport is! Look at the detail in that mural (like the girl's missing tooth)!!!

I love it. The subject is so heartwarming - children laughing and carefree. The whole mural also creates optical illusion. Kudos to the artist and the owners.

@JudyEv Told my daughter about the murals. Yes, we miss the murals our mayor erased. We now have blank, lifeless walls along our thoroughfares. You are very much correct. Those murals render happiness to sightseers.

What do they sell in their shop? (I'm sure you and Vince went back to check out their merchandise there. ) How do you pronounce 'Gnowangerup'? Oh, the Mollee Fowls look very interesting. Photo courtesy of ebird.org and is used under the Fair Use copyright.

@JudyEv Thank you. Yes, I read the Encyclopedia Britannica article on them when I looked for the picture. I find birds fascinating.

We didn't go to the shop as we didn't have time. I thought I had written about the mallee fowl but it must have been on Bubblews. I'll add a photo of a mallee fowl nest. Gnowangerup - no -an-ger-up. Maybe slight emphasis on 'an'

I like clever names. Our properties have always been 'Good Evans' which isn't particularly clever but we lived next to some people called Sims and privately I thought their place should be called 'Dim Sims' but I didn't ever suggest it to them. lol (Dim Sims is an Asian food but I'm sure you know that)
